About Me

"I can't understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I'm frightened of the old ones." - John Cage
Deep in the country and rolling hills of South Louisiana emerged an unlikely evangelist of electronic dance music. Ben Mullens a.k.a. DJ Moon was drawn to the early sounds of New Wave & Electro, and his parent’s extensive vinyl collection of Funk & Soul. Moon recalls "I was always fascinated by the sound of synthesizers and the heavy drums of Funk & Hip Hop....it was only natural that I combine the two and land on the Breakbeat side of things." Having grown up in the land that fueled the creation of everything from Rhythm & Blues, to Soul and even Funk (New Orleans is said to be the true birthplace of Funk by some music historians), it was only a natural progression for Moon to adopt its funky rhythms as his signature sound.
Moon got his start in Breaks around the mid 90's, having his tracks played at seminal clubs like Outerlimits and the Old Plaza Theatre. This exposure gave him the chance to see his tracks in action on the dance floor and gave him the inspiration to produce more in the studio. Moon's first tracks were released on the Hoodwink label on the east coast and eventually led him to sign with the Juice Recordings imprint out of Washington DC. While on the Juice label, Moon was able to remix Groove Armada's 'I See You Baby' among other tracks. Another opportunity that presented itself was remixing Loose Caboose for Jim Hopkins and DJ Dan's 'Electroliners' project. He and production partner & longtime friend DJ Hart remixed the Twitch Recordings classic in 2002.
More recently, Moon has released records in the UK on the London Breakz label and continues to release tracks on his own imprint Pumpin Records. His productions have received plays and respect from Orbital (Phil Hartnol), Plump DJs, Aquasky, Rennie Pilgrem, Breakneck, Blim, Simply Jeff and many more.
DJ Moon loves dance music, and it shows. From his highly energetic DJ Sets, to his intelligent funky production....DJ Moon will make you get down.
