Not renowned as a musical hotbed, Peterborough may have at last produced an act which may trouble the sales assistants at HMV. Sidearm are a triple guitar four piece with a heavy emphasis on percussive melodies and some serious kick pedalling drums. With some slightly surreal song titles like 'Precede the Map' and 'Jeremy's Parking Only', Sidearm would probably fit into a number of categories but there is certainly an air of Fugazi about their angular guitar parts and minimalist production. This is a very solid release with no room for slack ep fillers - every second is crafted with a purpose and there is no law against three or more separate killer riffs in each song. Recent reviewees Forward Russia! and The Half Rabbits would be good comparisons. Cracking graphics too...

I arrived at this gig considerably bemused at the turnout being rather like a sardine tin. I was respectfully impressed by the foursome. Their infamous backdrop screen projection was alive with a collection of the strangest images Ive seen bunched together (including ducks, coloured blobs, old houses and some form of Packman I think) and definitely added to the mystery that is Sidearm. Another factor that undeniably defines the group as multi-talented was their swap of instruments between songs, like a new variety of musical chairs! And what else do you expect from an art-rock band? Musically, the four knew how to perform. With an array of instrumental breaks thrown into most songs, it was easy to loose yourself in the melodies. As soon as you thought you had the tune worked out though, itd change tempo, rhythm and beat to transform into a seemingly different song. I could tell they enjoyed luring the crowd into a false sense of security, only to rip them out of it with a powerful passion-driven rage. And it was their music, their art that they had complete control over and could express themselves at an intimate level. I WILL be seeing this band again.
ORGAN ..130 AUG 25th 2005 Demo of the Week
SIDEARM Like we already said - we shall no longer be reviewing a million demos, we're just going to tell you about the very very best once a week, no more time for the average, only the most exciting - we're very very selective, when we tell you its goood then it really is goooooooood. From Peterborough with some wholesome post-rock flavoured indie adventure that tastes of warm restrained June of 44/31Knots/Mogwai. They have a scratchy semi-urgent semi-shouty edge, parking restrictions seem to upset them getting a little more than semi shouty now. Bits of Fugazi around their post-rock edges and jagged rampages. Most of the time theyre warmly restrained though, swapping the Fugazi bits for Godspeed bits, simpler construction than Godspeed, far simpler, thats the vibe though. I like this lots.

if this band were on "The X Factor" then the judges wouldn't have a clue what to say....... sidearm have real talent, they are intelligent, they make beautiful music and it isn't just about looking good and sounding good. I'm as fussy as people can be when it comes to music, and sidearm have grasped everything I like about bands and music. I'd rate these tracks at least level with At The Drive Ins "Relationship of Command". The fact that you can see this band in a small pub behind Argos in Peterborough is just astounding. If I can get there, I will.

I like the presentation, whether that's the artwork on the cd - or the website's design. Plus if you see them live they start their shows with pretentious poetry readings and weird backdrop screen projections! Great stuff! Listen to this if you like Mogwai / Godspeed you black emperor it's a demo - so don't expect it to sound ' fully there ' just yet, but considering the budget this was done on it's as fine a piece of angst fuelled rock as any.
