(Product Descripyion)
T here
are some great jazz bass players in the world, and Luciano
Calazans (a Salvador native living in the neighborhood of
Barris) is one of them. What he has -- and the others don’t --
is a bone-deep Brazilian sensibility and a peerless knowledge of
Brazilian rhythms woven into his compositions and style. A
facile, but not entirely futile, collocation might be "the
Brazilian Jaco Pastorius" (Luciano has a pithy tale of one cold
night outside a jazz bar on the south side of Chicago, when
there was no way the passing taxis could be bothered to consider
him and his two musician companions as fares...the three were on
a night off from Margareth Menezes’ U.S. tour. In desperation
Luciano approached a cop -- African American -- who was able to
hail a cab for them. And no, language wasn’t the
problem...Luciano speaks excellent English.)
T he
first cut here is something of virtuosic showoffishness -- just
bass and pandeiro (tamborin) playing choro, a classic Brazilian
style usually involving several more instruments -- the music
then moving onto Luciano’s eclectic jazz and funk styles.

" B assist,
composer and conductor Luciano Calazans is one of the foremost
musicians of Salvador, the capital of the Brazilian
state of
Bahia and a city that is a musical hotbed within this intensely
musical country. Luciano has played with the vast majority of
his hometown’s prominent musicians as well as with some of
Brazil’s biggest stars. He is one of Salvador’s most respected
and sought-after bassists, both for recording and live
performance. Among those who have called upon Luciano’s talents
are Gilberto Gil, Margareth Menezes, Ivete Sangalo, Banda
Reflexus, Sarajane, Simone Moreno, Gerônimo, Léo Gandelman,
Ricardo Chaves, Fafá de Belém, Zezé Di Camargo e Luciano, Leo
Gandelman and Maestro Aldo Brizzi. Luciano has made numerous
concert appearances in Brazil and has performed in large
festivals in Europe and the U.S.
A
native of the Salvador neighborhood of Liberdade—South America’s
largest centre of persons of African descent—Luciano’s early
development as a musician took place during a time of political
and social ferment and intense creativity on the Bahian musical
scene. He absorbed all of the diverse sounds of his environment—the
samba-reggae pioneered by Olodum and others in the 1980s;
various traditional Afro-Bahian genres, including samba and the
ijexá of the traditional afoxé carnival groups; the various
traditional styles of Northeastern Brazil (such as baião, xote
and xaxado); the Afro-Cuban salsa sounds that took firm root in
Salvador in the 80s; along with the classic songs of one of
Música Popular Brasileira’s most fertile periods. Also informing
his creativity are North American jazz, popular and
rhythm-and-blues currents, as well as the classical music he
assimilated during his training at the School of Music of the
Federal University of Bahia. Luciano recombines all of this
musical DNA to create a sound that is at once Bahian, Brazilian,
global, and uniquely personal, and which may be heard in his
first solo CD, Contrabaixo Astral."
