WHY PUSH 1 HIT WHEN I CAN PUSH 3! RECE A REAL MC!

About Me

Lorice Steele aka Rece Steele is a part of the new breed of female rappers. She’s combination of the 80’s love of hip-hop, the 90’s exploration of a woman’s sexuality, and has the business savvy of today’s most successful artist. Rapping for the past eleven years, 24-year old Rece has yet to establish her stardom; but has definitely sunk her teeth into the role of being a business woman that guides her own career.“I am my own manager and A.R.,” stated Rece. “Nobody can sell you as much as you sell yourself.” With her all-female company 80’s Baby Productions not only is she cementing the ground work for her own budding career, she’s also attempting to bring hip-hop back to its original art form. An ambitious project for a new artist, she understands that roots of hip-hop lies in its ability to be a form of self-expression. “I want a voice,” Rece proclaims. “I don’t want to be just a rapper. I’m dead serious about that.”For Rece music has been a creative outlet for as long as she can remember. When asked how she started rapping, she paused then simply said: “Music just comes naturally to me.” At the age of seven she began writing poems. By thirteen she was secretly jotting down rhymes in her notebook. As a teenage she began seriously honing her writing skills, largely influenced by Biggie, Jay-Z, Lil Kim, and Foxy Brown. Reminiscing she said: “Jay-Z’s In My Lifetime Volume I was one of the first albums I learned word for word.”The daughter of rapper L.A. Star, Rece acquired her passion for hip-hip from her mother, and knowledge about the financial reality of the music business. As a child watching her mother’s promising career abruptly end, she learned early on that the financial freedom most artists project is only an illusion. “I [saw] my mother get an advance check, and have nothing to show for it but an eight-ball jacket.” Determined to not let the same thing happen to her own career Rece is adamant about having her say. “I just want a little bit power in what’s going on with me. Your ideas should be able to come to the table.”Like most artists she has had her share of discouraging moments and horror stories. Being an attractive young female rapper, she’s been offered more than her share of propositions that have nothing to do with her talent. She is well aware of the industry’s blatant chauvinistic practices, and knows how to navigate around them. Based her own experiences she believes it’s important for female artists to network wisely, and only work with men that are genuinely interested in their careers. Her advice for other new female artists is simple and straight the point: “Even if he’s cute with a nice chain you can’t be fooled by that. This is a business.”Following her dreams, working full-time as a License Practitioner Nurse, and motherhood are all things that make her feel conflicted at times. “You try to be around as much as possible. Sometimes I have to take three days off and say I’m just going home to cook dinner and be with my son.” With the help of a supportive family and her son’s father, so far she has been able to successfully juggle being a mother and an aspiring artist. Even her five-year old son who has just started kindergarten contributes to the Rece Steele Movement. He often critiques her music, and helps packager her CD’s. It’s important to her that he doesn’t feel neglected and is informed about her career. Like many up-coming artist Rece Steele is talented. She has even caught the attention of super producers such as Eric Sermon and Cool n’ Dre. She’s currently working with producer Skitzo who has largely worked with the Dip Set. Her raspy-voiced lyrics range from gangster chick bravado to everyday life. But what sets Rece apart are not her rhymes, it’s her infectious nature and her keen understanding of the business. Extremely passionate about her craft she’s reminiscent of the early artists who did it purely for the love of hip-hop. True to the essence of the hip-hop a large part of this Bronx’s native ten-year plan is to bring the culture back to New York City. When asked what she would do if she ever met Jay-Z who is one of her idols she deeply laughed and excitedly said: “I would love to spit for him. It would just be me rapping in the street as loud as I can.” Rece Steele is definitely an artist to look out for in 2007. She is many things, a diligent rapper, a business woman, a young mother, and a daughter that will hopefully one day fulfill her mother’s dreams.http://www.myspace.com/recesteeleBackCOPYRIGHT 2007 SHAHECHELON.COM src="http://www.layouts.fm/cnt/530143.gif" width="1" height="1" alt=""
