Classical composer & cross-over musician

About Me

Anders Koppel (composer and musician) was born in 1947 into a family of several musicians, being the son of composer and pianist Herman D.Koppel. Child singer in the Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir. Piano studies with his father and sister from age 4, recorder from age 7, and at 14 he began playing the clarinet and made several television and concert appearances, such as the first performance in '62 of his father's Variations. Took up the organ in 1966 and founded in 1967, together with his brother Thomas, the legendary rock group ’Savage Rose’. For the next seven 7 years, the band toured extensively all over Europe, coast-to-coast USA (Newport Jazzfestival ‘71) and recorded 8 albums in studios in London, Los Angeles, Rome and Copenhagen. Left the group in ‘74 to make his first solo recordings, ’Valmuevejen’ with singer Otto Brandenburg, and ’Aftenlandet’ (’75), a progressive instrumental album. Cofounded 1976 the world-music trio ’Bazaar’ (bassoon/clarinet, percussion and organ), which has released 9 albums and still after 30 years performs regularly. In the years 1974-80 he was very active as a record producer and studio musician. Since ‘96, he has also been playing in ‘KAK’ with his son, saxophone-player Benjamin Koppel (2 CDs). Together, they gave concerts in New York, Paris (Radio France) and Scandinavia. Since the early ‘80s, he has devoted most of his time in composing, the rest of it in playing with his two bands. ____________________________________________________________ _______________ In the ‘80s and ‘90s, Anders Koppel worked mostly for the theatre and film industry. He composed the music for 8 ballets with the ’New Danish Dance Theatre’, for 50 theatrical plays (among them 4 musicals) and for more than 100 movies. ____________________________________________________________ _______________ Since ’97, he has mostly composed scores for classical ensembles. A list of over 100 works of score music is quickly growing - solo pieces, chamber music, orchestral and vocal works, 20 concertos and an opera. Among the concertos, which form the main body of his orchestral work, are four marimba concertos, which are being performed all over the world - the first one more than 300 times. The 4th marimba concerto was premiered at Musikverein, Vienna in november 2006 and has later been performed in several major concert halls, such as Carnegie Hall. Also the two saxophone concertos (with his son Benjamin on saxophone) met with international acclaim when released on CD in ‘06. In ’08, a new CD has been released on Dacapo ”Anders Koppel: Double Concertos” with double concertos for violin/accordion and sax/piano, recorded by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. Among his chamber music works are: string quartet, string trio, piano trio (”Rivolta”), saxophone quartet, wind quintet (”Sonatine”), brass quintet, solo piano works (”Solo Concertante” I and II), duos for vln/pno, cello/accordion (”Rhapsody”) and one of his most widely performed works: ”Toccata” for vibes and marimba, originally composed for the Safri Duo. ____________________________________________________________ _______________ His works has been performed by philharmonic orchestras all over the world, such as RSO Wien, SO Graz, SO Innsbruck, Bruckner Orchester Linz, Mozarteum Salzburg, Orchester Saar-Brücken, Thüringen SO, Stuttgart SO, NDR Rundfunk Orchester, Luxembourg SO, Latvia National SO, Kasakhstan SO, Beijing SO, Omnibus Ensemble Uzbekistan, London Mozart Players, Norrköping SO, Hälsingborg SO, Poznan SO Poland, Amadeus Ensemble Poland, Haydn Orchestra Bolzano, Bogota Philharmonics, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Aalborg SO, Odense SO, Aarhus SO, Sønderjyllands SO, Copenhagen Philharmonic, as well as by chamber ensembles from around the world. ____________________________________________________________ _______________ Anders Koppel has given masterclasses at universities in Vienna, Salzburg and Linz and has been guest at Composer in Dialogue at Mozarteum, Salzburg. In '04, he was composer in residence at Odense Symphony Orchestra, in '07-'09 at Aalborg Symphony Orchestra. ____________________________________________________________ _______________ Anders Koppel has received several prizes and rewards, and the composer has twice been awarded a ’Robert’ for best film score (‘94 and ‘96). In 2001, he was rewarded a life-time grant from the Danish State. ____________________________________________________________ _______________ Publisher: Edition Wilhelm Hansen www.ewh.dk, Norsk Musikforlag (early works).
