Scofield-Bass, Vocals; Ken Howe-DrumsThe Whopner County Country All Stars have been, and are currently writing and performing songs for you. We play about once a month and spend the other three weeks of the month writing and arranging all kinds of songs from classic country (Loretta Lynn,Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, to name a few ) and many original tunes that vary in styles from old soul sounds reminiscent of Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, and Dusty Springfield to Elvis Costello, Hank Williams III, Wilco, etc... We have a darn tootin' good time and try to make every show fun for you and fun for us, believing that every night we play is a honky tonk saturday night and should be celebrated with as much enthusiasm, and vigor as the last. Everyone who comes recieves a complimentary sticker or button, and if they have the capacity to let their hair down, are guaranteed to have a rootin' tootin' good time under neon signs. Thank Y' all for checkin' out our website and we sincerely hope you get a kick out of the pictures, films, links, and junk here in Whopner County. It's been a pleasure seeing so many folks enjoying themselvesand it is a real honor and always a pleasure playin' with some of the most entertaining folks we've seen and heard. God bless you. We look forward to seeing you real soon.Reviews:The Register Guard Ticket had this to say about The Whopner County Country All Stars and their first album "Always A Pleasure". Fronted by the almost-twangy Sara Scofield. (almost?) With the quote in the liner notes, "Saloon music was never meant to be taken seriously," you might assume the new release from The Whopner County Country All Stars was no more than music for a good time in a country bar. But that's not all. Although these steel-guitar-heavy tunes would be right at home sonically in a smoky bar, the wry lyrics would entertain the stay-at- home set, too. That's because though the country sound is straightforward enough, some of the songs catch you by surprise with their blunt content. Take "Sorry Grandma," where youngsters confess to their grandmother they are rotten kids who maybe don't deserve the $20 they get for their birthdays and Christmas because of their alcohol and tobacco use. The band is made up of local all-stars. It features Sara Scofield, one of the leaders of the fledgling Emerald City Roller Girls league, on vocals, On drums is Evin Marshall, whose musical mark has been all over Eugene for years booking for local clubs and producing hip-hop and metal shows (not to mention lighting the fuse for this hillbilly experiment) (featured on the first album, recently stepped down, making room for Colorado transplant Ken Howe).Check out more whopco videos on youtube.com. Just type in, whopco, or whopner, and select music as your category search. If that makes sense. You can also just google whopco. The Eugene Weekly wrote and article titled "A Whoppin' Good Time," in their November 8th, 2007 printing. It reads as follows:In light of the recent passing on of Porter Wagoner to that big ol' Opry in the sky, I found myself pondering the top country duet partners. There are none now living who can match the ageless, timeless appeal of Johnny and June, Loretta and Conway Twitty, George Jones and Tammy Wynette or Porter and Dolly Parton; individually they were fantastic entertainers, but together these duet partners were peerless. Porter's deep baaritone and Dolly's weightless twang combined for flawless harmonies that were as country as grits and as spiritually fortifying as a day in church. (Amen, sister!) In the midst of my reverie of the good old days of country, into my hands fell a CD by Eugene's own Whopner County Country All Stars, a band I'm happy to say basks in some of that old-school country duets in the same way these past country all-stars did: with impeccale timing, a sense of humor and dramatic gestures. The local five-piece group is a cover band in style only, writingoriginal songs in the spirit of their musical heroes like some of the aforementioned greats. Together for five years now, they recently released a new CD, "Always A Pleasure." Where Sara's vocals stand alone, as they do on the "Sittin' Here," she brings a barroom country blues vibe. J.P.'s vocals are slowly parsed, each syllable weighty with meaning just like the old country greats, whether apologizing to his grandma for his life gone wrong in "Sorry Grandma" or singing about how he met his lady friend in the "Hoosgow." (lady friend? have another listen.) The many songs they sing together are good old honky tonk to get the party started.Porter and Dolly would be proud! (just for the official record, Greg and Sara sing the duets. It would be a little creepy for J.P. and Sara singin' about their romantic love relationship, they are brother and sister.)..
