Every once in a while I receive a disc with little or
no information about the band. These “mystery†CD’s
usually result in a serious bought of frustration on
my part because I know so little about the band and
where they are coming from. Well, WITH A GUN sent over
a duped copy of their 2006 EP with handwritten song
titles and literally nothing else. Is this perhaps
another cruel joke by our revered romper lady? The
conspiracy theorist in Sam Adams would probably think
so… Anyway, I digress. Upon further research I
discovered that they, like about a billion other
people it seems, have a profile on myspace. Surely, I
thought, this would lead me to the promise land and I
could absorb some knowledge about this band other than
their name. Perhaps I thought too soon because the
only blurb on the site describes a band that play rock
music “the way it should be played; loud, sexy,
sweaty, violent and beautiful.†Ironically, their
self-ascribed description was right on target,
splitting the apple over the assistant’s head. With
only four songs and an impressive DIY ethic, this
Chicago, Illinois band break out the old school ruler
and taught a lesson in rock and roll with an edgy
punkish character. The punk side is minimal though
while the rock becomes the focal point through each of
the four songs. Influences range from BLACK SABBATH,
THE STOOGES and MOTORHEAD. In a real sense, they fused
together an ounce of each of the aforementioned groups
in an effort to create that uniquely dirty rock and
roll experience. At times the songs sounded curiously
simple but either way, you couldn’t prevent yourself
from becoming engrossed in its infectious clutches.
Rather than stumbling over anymore three-dollar words
I will say this; they have great hooks, a sense for
the fundamental and an energetic vibe. Good rock and
roll should always have this-shouldn’t it?
