SCHOOL GIRLS ARE IN THE HOUSE! -
KOULUTYTOT ON TALOSSA!
School Girls are producer Lassie Bunter and vocalist Lovette Orleans.
Lassie has loved house music since 1987 when she was a little girl. She was fascinated by the magic sounds of The Confettis, Hithouse, Raze, Todd Terry, Mr. Fingers, A Guy Called Gerald, Inner City and The Jungle Brothers. First she fell in love with European acid house, italo disco and belgian new beat and then discovered the Chicago sound knowing that house music was going to be the love of her life. Lassie started to collect 12"s and casettes and started to make acid house mixtapes. Same time in another place Lovette was writing her lovely poems and serving tea at her private geisha parties. At the early age she was a talented visual artist and loved the music of Nina Hagen and Klaus Nomi. She was a teenage geisha punk rocker with a crush with dance music.
Years later Lassie and Lovette met each other by accident and they formed a dance music act called Trans-Parent. It was mind blowing 2-year period with live gigs, art exhibitions and video art extravaganzas with a massive tranny following. That wasn't enough and the girls started to connect with several producers to make more music. After some crappy tracks with crappy producers Lassie and Lovette found their way to the saddest suburbia ghetto in Tampere where the coolest hiphop and t-e-c-h-n-o music in Finland was made.
Working with Noise Production's techno wizard Mike Not was a kick start to School Girls' career (thanks a million Mike). Girls started the new era with the name SCHOOL GIRLS. Lassie and Lovette asked their friends to feature in studio sessions and live gigs as guest vocalists. Ines Boom, Dia Rahmen and Tii Ricks did their best in School Girls' early years.
...Love will come to you, you don't have to go anywhere.
Stay there where ever you are. Stay.
Love will come thru the closed doors
doncha try to use your muscular force...
After months of recording sessions Girls fascinated their live audience with a set of house music with the recited diva vocals and a proper pop choruses. Several finnish magazines, web-zines and radio stations were interested in this unique house music phenomenon and the girls did a tour across Finland. Lassie and Lovette also deejayed in School Girls' own latin house night at their Bimbo Club and Drag Race at gay nightclub Mixei in Tampere.
School Girls wrote new tracks for club play and performed frequently in clubs and festivals. Lovette performed the track Beautiful live in Miss Drag Queen 2000 Contest in Helsinki among some lips sync "artists". Beautiful was released later on Otter Records' first ever finnish gay compilation Heita voltti CD in 2000.
Hey! That's the first "Drag Queen" track released in Finland!
...I am beautiful,
I look marvellous,
I am fabulous,
I look gorgeous,
I know it and you know it too. That's the least I expect from you...
School Girls initiated new era in 2001 launching production in their own Mujer Music studio in central Finland. Lassie's talent on arranging and mixing brought new darker dimension to group's music. School Girls started to make music for themselves not for the big audience. Deep, dark, tribal School Girls' sound was born.
Lesson One completed at new years eve 2002. Full lenght CD contains twelve bootleg style tracks such as Lesson One (sampling Readers Digest language course 7 inch vinyl), These Boots (remake of Nancy Sinatra's cut), Nobody’s Wife (electroclashing Anouk’s hit), It's Wonderful (old school house remix of S'express track Superfly Guy) plus some updated School Girls material.
In the summer 2002 School Girls recorded new vocals in Kiikka countryside and during the fall/winter the new School Girls sound was invented in Mujer Music studio. Head shredding tough house cuts with spoken vocals and fierce percussion became the most essential elements in School Girls' music.
2003 was quite productive year for School Girls and many new cuts were completed for the live gig in La-Bas Studio @ Koneisto electronic music festival. Thoroughly sampladelic track Music is making the people come together and Rhythms Of Desire brings it's atmosphere from the deepest Africa. Una Mariposa Nocturna unites metaphoric lyrics with deep tribal house sound creating musica electrica of it's best in finnish underground.
Then was times for several mash-ups and remix projects. Deejays were playing School Girls' Kylie and Kelis bootleg remixes. Lovette also made toasted vocals for the Madonna cover Music. She also started to write spanish vocals for the new tracks after staying in Barcelona as an exchange student.
These days School Girls are more focused on producing quality house music in their Mujer Music studio. Girls don't do live gigs these days but ocassionally you can see Lassie and Lovette at some underground raves and parties. New material is made constantly : Candidez, Una Mujer Mecanica, Una Mariposa Nocturna, Ultra Blue Neutralizer 2007, La Rumba Revuelta and lots of remakes of their own tracks and some remixes. The lesson goes on...
