About Me

The emotional core of AlonA can be heard on the captivating six-track debut EP MAELSTROM, which navigates an intense, musical minefield through life’s most complex emotions including love, rage and revenge. Recorded at Dragonfly Studios in Virginia, Maelstrom was co-produced by Candice AlonA, producer/engineer, Scott Spelbring (Cinder Road, Jason Mraz, O.A.R.) and Harry Evans (Fools and Horses), and mastered by Grammy Award winner, Charlie Pilzer.
It’s no accident that the fiery torrent of emotions expressed on Maelstrom directly reflects the environment of a tumultuous relationship. “These songs are about dancing on that razor-sharp edge between loving and hating someone to death…either way, somebody might die – metaphorically, of course. You could say that these tracks are somewhat autobiographical. I went through a period of time where most of my relationships ran like a PBS special for the dysfunctional and melodramatic; we’d fight like dogs only to end up in bed together the next night.”
AlonA performs frequently in the DC/Maryland area, sometimes with the full band but just as often with Candice accompanied only by her guitarist. “I love to get more intimate with the microphone in ways you can’t do with a full band,” she explains. “I’d compare it to when Tori Amos performs live without a band and her vocal delivery takes on a dimension where it’s more about delivering the mood and the lyrics. I think it’s easier to connect that way, because some of the intimacy is lost with a full band.” Clearly Candice AlonA has barely begun to plum the depths of her potential as a vocalist, songwriter, musician and recording artist.

More about "Maelstrom" - track by track storylines...
This is the story of two lovely people who loved each other almost to death :) It is a typical romantic tragedy a la Sweeney Todd (you know the movie with Johnny Depp?)...a merry-go-round of passion and pain, love and tears...can you hear the violins yet? It is a dramatization of a roller-coaster affair that happily ended in a stable friendship...but not before a little blood shed. *wink*
The Missing
I wrote the first track which is titled, "The Missing" with a full video visualization in my head as the lyrics came to me. It is about a girl walking through town, looking at all the places she had been with her ex and having flash backs of their good times. It is a song about those little silly things that you remember when someone is gone...like knowing all the reality gossip to date because they loved to watch every reality show currently airing and you would watch it together even though you absolutly abhor reality tv...now of course, everytime you pass by MTV on your channel surf you can’t help but think of that ex...that’s, "The Missing".
Maelstrom
The title track of the Maelstrom EP comes from the most emotionally intense part of a super tumultuous relationship that I had just gotten out of. In a lot of ways it was a typical, "love you, f**k you" cycle of really being total into one another and super attached then fighting something awful, breaking up, exchanging personal items left at each other’s houses...only to get back together again and start over. This song is about the height of the fights. Passion, love and anger can make a very deadly combination. Therefore this song is packed with climaxing chorus’ and sinister lyrics. It’s what you want to listen to when you are REALLY mad at someone that ultimately, you really love. But you can’t really tell them either thing at the moment...
ErosTHANATOS
The title of this song means "life and death instinct" It is a term coined by Psychoanalyst, Sigmund Freud during his development of human drive theories. He basically postulates that humans are driven by two conflicting central desires: the life drive (Eros) (survival, propagation, hunger, thirst, and sex) and the death drive (Thanatos). In Greek mythology, Eros was the primordial god of lust, love, and Thanatos was the god of death...
But aside for my obvious interest in psychology and slightly dorky this song is about doing something that you know is bad for you, over and over again. Specifically for me, it was the theme that permeates throughout the Maelstrom EP, this merry-go-round love affair of hatred and love. So when I wrote this song, the relationship was really pretty much over but temptation for one more go around was pretty strong. So I felt like it was my own inner conflict between my life and death instincts. I could deny myself and choose life, or engage again and wait for the inevitable...yes, it is a tad overly dramatic but that is the nature of my creative mind. :)
Enough
Ironically, this song did not come anywhere near the end of this tragic love affair I was having...it came somewhere in the middle when I thought I was fed up enough to walk away. But if you listen closely to the lyrics you will hear that it is from the voice of someone who would rather be left than to have to do the leaving. Even still, it is about having had enough of the crap. If you don’t like what I’ve got, then do me the favor of moving on...pAlonA’s Electronic Press Kit:
