Biography
DJ Slipstream discovered the club/rave scene at the tender age of 21. Never before had he experienced a social phenomenon promoting such unity and understanding through music. Soon afterwards he met Nougi Aramburo (DJ Nugz), who introduced him to breakbeat. Slipstream looked on as DJ Nugz sculpted songs into one seamless, intense mix. The next thing he knew, Slipstream was on the turntables himself, learning how to master beat matching, cueing, and all the other elements of producing a hot mix.
Slipstream had no records, no equipment, and no idea what genre to spin—but DJ Nugz continued to support his interest in DJing. Leaving Nougi's house one day, he suggested that Slipstream pick up a CD called “LTJ Bukem Mixmag Live.†It was then that the fledgling DJ was first exposed to the world of jungle/drum & bass—and became forever hooked.
Slipstream began to experiment with jungle: first jump-up, then tech step. Finally he found his direction. One fateful day at the Progression Sessions Tour in Greensboro, North Carolina, Slipstream for the first time watched as LTJ Bukem, MC Conrad and Blame take to the stage. It was nothing less than total entrancement. This sub-genre called atmospheric expressed emotion and moved him on a spiritual level like no other form of drum & bass. The very next day, Slipstream began investing in atmospheric tracks. Other artists who would influence him include LTJ Bukem, Fabio, Grooverider, Blame, Slipmaster J, Goldie, Dara, DB and Orion.
After some years of intermittent practice and acquisition of equipment and records, Slipstream began his DJ career with a booking at Club Gotham (thanks to Hotwax Harley, resident DJ at Club Gotham and founder of Radiance, the Triangle’s longest and most respected underground weekly—find it at www.keepersofsound.com ).
Slipstream has spun at events with the mighty likes of Jeffee, Dara, Odi, Pollen, DJ Dan, Max Graham, Icey, Micro, Mathematics, LTJ Bukem, MC Conrad, Nookie and Makoto. Just as he himself has evolved over time, Slipstream’s style has mellowed—without losing edge. More liquid-like in mix, his beats are dished out with spoonfuls of deep atmospheric drum & bass.
Slipstream’s latest musical interest involves spinning deep house, funky house, club house and trance. He has joined up with DJ’s Nugz and Aron Wayne to bring a new monthly dance event for the LGBT community called Thrive to Durham. Find out more about this event at myspace.com/thriveindurham .
