A.E. started playing a toy-keyboard at the age of 10 and progressed to piano two years later. At 16 he got quite interested in acoustic guitar, as well as in electric bass the following year. After studying jazz piano in Rome with arranger Nuccio Intrieri <[i>Pino Daniele, Steve Grossman, Dick Oatts], he got back to Paris and started bass lessons with both Pascal Mulot <[i>Steve Lukather, Simon Phillips, Steve Vai] and Daniel Yvinec <[i>David Sylvian, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Suzanne Vega]. He was soon introduced to guitar hero Fred Vernet <[i>Stanley Clarke, Alain Caron, Joe Satriani] who asked him to join his band, which had featured in the drumseat the likes of Paco Séry, Manu Katché and Jon Moffett. Nevertheless, for his following album Vernet was to switch to bass himself, and invited Toto’s Steve Lukather to play guitar on his project. After hearing a rehearsal tape of the former line-up, Steve congratulated with A.E. for his sense of groove: a dream come true for this young cat, for whom “Luke†had always been a huge influence.
Since then, A.E. has crossed paths with New Orleans-based horn players Wynton Marsalis and Eddie Boh Paris (the latter even described him as “one hot motherfucker on bass !â€), Marc Berthoumieux <[i>Richard Bona, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Didier Lockwood], Cyrille-Aimée Daudel <[i>John Abercrombie], Francesco di Cicco <[i>Stefano di Battista], Louis Winsberg <[i>Sixun, Jaleo], Cristiano “T-rtz†Tortoioli <[i>Blasco Band], Gino Evangelista <[i>Lucio Dalla, Antonello Venditti, Ron, Nino Buonocore] and his project Probabilecoda, Fabrizio Fedele <[i>Osanna, Nativa, Aleandro Baldi], Emanuele Primavera <[i>Saturnino], Stefano Distaso <[i>Lestofunk], Stefano Ragni, Floriano Bocchino <[i>L’aura, Emoglobe], Carlo Bosco <[i>Bruno Tommaso], Laurent Assoulen, Nando de Luca <[i>Gleba], Antonia Bennett, Gioia Ruvo <[i>Hora Nueva], Holger Schellwat, Marco Bifolchi <[i>Lestofunk], Artis Orubs, Toti Panzanelli <[i>Fabio Concato, Antonello Venditti, Anna Oxa], Greta Panettieri <[i>Pat Metheny], Andrea Ambrosi <[i>Giovanni Mirabassi], Michael “Spike†Wilner <[i>Pierre Boussaguet, Tony Bennett, Wynton Marsalis], Francesco Ciarfuglia <[i>Paul McCandless, Stefano Bollani], Lucas Bellotti <[i>Bobby Soul & Les Gastones, Laura Mars], Philippe Aboukrat <[i>Mauro Serri, Jean-Jacques Milteau, Open Air], Giulio Sirci <[i>Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin], Dave Ferrante <[i>Zorama, Tiziana Rivale, Irene Fargo], Daniele “Bassistinto†Mencarelli <[i>Stefano Bollani, Ivano Fossati], Mario Mazzaro <[i>Nino Buonocore, Antonio Onorato, Dennis Chambers], Andrea Patron, Pedro Spallati <[i>Mario Raja], James Cruickshank <[i>Nick Barker, Chris Kenna], Tommaso “Puffio†Boldrini <[i>Matta-Clast], Federico Turreni <[i>Giorgio Rosciglione], Orchestre d’Harmonie de Nangis, Dario Franco <[i>Daniele Sepe, Antonello Paliotti, Antonio Onorato], Marcello Spampinato <[i>Chromicon], Emiliano Turi <[i>Eiffel, Mop], Erwin Huigen, Alberto Albertini <[i>Luca Carboni], Gianni Maestrucci <[i>Jovanotti, Christian Meyer], Italian pop band Mentivo, French pop band Fratéo, and many others.
Apart from being the co-leader of ethno-fusion project Aznalubma, in which he extends his playing to instruments such as Irish tin whistle and “glass percussion†(fruit juice bottles used as Indian UDU drums), A.E. currently writes for French revues Bassiste Magazine and Batterie Magazine, as well as in the music column of Italian newspaper Il Corriere del Mezzogiorno. He has interviewed some of the greatest musicians on the planet: Greg Lake, Tony Levin, Steve Hackett, Gary Willis, Meshell Ndegeocello, Phil Chen, Richie Barshay, Christian McBride, Leland Sklar, only to name a few.
