Get to know JC Bravo with JC's Q & A
So who is JC Bravo?
I am an artist. I create characters that i call CABEZONES y NARIZONES. They are inspired by derogatory terms used in latin american cultures. For example, calling someone a Cabezon(big-headed) would typically imply that that person is stubborn or foolish. Likewise, Narizon(big-nosed)would imply impotence. I use these characters to create social commentary mainly dealing with vice and folly. I am also developing my own style of painting called SENSUALISM.This style is characterized by rich color, roundness, the illusion of softness and voluptuous forms.
Where are you located?
Well, I’ve practically lived in Miami beach, Florida all my life. Originally though, I was born in Peru. I’m very proud of my heritage. In fact, most of who I am is due to my family’s cultural upbringing. Those formative years in Peru, filled with terrorism and political crisis, have had a lasting impression on me and have somehow found their way into my art
What are your hobbies?
I’m a avid reader dealing with topics about the human condition. I also write about various things. However, nothing else (other than my art) fulfills me more than surfing. Most of my days are spent painting from dawn until sunset. But every so often, when the waves are breaking, ill take some time off work to go surfing. I love the beach and could never part from it for too long. It inspires me. The ocean is like our subconscious, when you jump into it you enter another world, a world of wonder and beauty.
Have you studied?
Since childhood, I’m glad to say I've always had a natural talent. But I wanted to explore the depth of my abilities. So, I’m proud to say I became a student of my passion and gone as far to earn a bachelors in ART with a minor in psychology. Also, ive travelled to some of the greatest museums in the world to learn from the masters.
What have been your accomplishments?
Althought i consider awards and degrees to be great what i find most rewarding is actually completing a painting. Due to the labor and time i dedicate to my work finishing a piece is a mighty challenge.
