About Me

Shrimp is the true story of Dom, a disabled Vietnamese war orphan who was airlifted out of Saigon at the end of the Vietnam war in 1975 and raised on a sheep station in Mt.Gambier. This theatre production explores Dom’s journey as he returns to Vietnam thirty years later, in search of his family and himself. Through direct audience address, and a multiplicity of scenes and characters, Dom describes the contradictions in his cultural upbringing: Being Vietnamese on the outside and an Aussie sheep shearer on the inside. Shrimp is a play, a painting, that has something rare in our time. A golden heart. It captures even the most cynical of minds through it’s humour and breathes life into a subject that would, for the most part, lay dormant in the suburban interiors of our Australian landscape. We are proud to find that the audiences saw what we did and this, it’s second season will be produced by La Mama, Melbourne Workers Theatre and Regional Arts Vic. The writer Dominic Golding took up acting as a self development tool to work on his voice and movement technique at the Centre of Performing Arts in Adelaide. He went on to further study in Directing and Drama theory at Flinders University. In his BA Honours he was awarded the R.A. Simpson International Travelling Scholarship to write a play script based on his experiences during his fi rst trip to Vietnam and growing up in rural Australia. His unique style of writing creates colour, humour and atmosphere through poetic prose.
