Kenny's Castaways (NYC)

Legendary Music Venue in Greenwich Village

About Me

First opened in 1967, Kenny's Castaways immediately became the venue of choice among up and coming acts. It all started when a little known band called the New York Dolls took the stage for their first club gig outside the Mercer Arts Center. It was during one of these New York Dolls shows that Joey and DeeDee Ramone met.
Soon after came acts such as Blondie, Aerosmith, Blues Traveler, The Roaches, Spin Doctors and the poetic styling of Patti Smith. Yoko Ono had a residency at Kenny's in the early 70's. The Smithereens were the house band in 1980, and Phish played their first ever New York City show at Kenny's in March of 1988. An unknown singer named Patty Smyth was performing when Columbia Records came in looking for a vocalist for the newly signed Scandal. And, perhaps one of the most memorable moments came when Bruce Springsteen took the stage for a one week run in 1973. This would be his first ever NYC show with the "E Street Band".
Many things have changed in forty years, but one thing has remained constant: Kenny's Castaways is still showcasing some of the best talent around. Kenny's continuously maintains its eclectic policy of booking great music of all styles. With it's newly installed sound system and remodeled stage and V.I.P. balcony area, Kenny's Castaways is the place to showcase the finest musicians and bands in the country. In 2007 Kenny's Castaways will celebrate 40 years of great live music in New York City.

Sounds Like: In the early 70's, rock photographer Bob Gruen and his wife Nadya purchased a portable video recorder. In a period of three years they shot over 40 hours of New York Dolls footage. Now for the first time ever this footage is unveiled. This feature length documentary captures the band during early performances in New York at Kenny's Castaways and Max's Kansas City

"We went back to New York early in September and played a showcase at Kennys Castaways. And believe it or not, we started to get some good reviews."
