HERE"S A GOOD QUOTE TO LIVE BY: Aim for success, not perfection. Never give up your right to be wrong, because then you will lose the ability to learn new things and move forward with your life. Remember that fear always lurks behind perfectionism. Confronting your fears and allowing yourself the right to be human can, paradoxically, make you a far happier and more productive person.' poverty and hip hop,
poverty and hip hop, not an excuse but an explanationIn lower income communities where there is no tax income to the state because of lack in proper or legal jobs, they get screwed over in the redistribution of the money from the state. The state figures, hey they aren't contributing, they get back what they give. Its a big problem in this country. Part of the American Darwinism mind set. Under the current regime, local taxes-particularly the property tax- finance a number of public services, including schools, police, fire protection, and sanitation. It is well known that this system creates dramatic disparities in the level of services different municipalities can afford. The saddest fact is that a wealthy locality will rationally seek to prevent construction of mutifamily units or low income housing, because the residents of such housing would consume more in local services than they would contribute in taxes. the hostility of wealthy suburbs to low income residents contributes to poverty concentration in the inner cities and, more recently in the inner ring of metropolitan suburbs. This geographic isolation creates a self-perpetuating cycle of poverty that compounds the burden of poverty alone. There are fewer jobs in low income societies, and a lot of times, people living in these communites don't have a means of traveling to find or get a job some place else. So in this vicious cycle of a black hole, they are left selling drugs, or their bodies to survive. The suits on capital hill are no help. I'm not saying all politicians are corrupt, but they become that way the further up the political totem poll they climb. As much as they preach about helping the poor and the need to do so, they implement laws that restrain them to that lifestyle. I have a friend who's a third grade teacher in Newark, who tells me that their text books have copyrights dating back to the 70's. How is a society or generation suppose to advance if the information they are learning doesn't allow them to assimilate with advancements in the culture surrounding them. People are quick to crucify the hip hop culture's use of words like bitches and ho's, but never stop to think about the root of the problem. Say a child growing up with a below then average education, in a severly low income society, watch their parents or parent struggle to make ends meet by selling their bodies or drugs. He hears his neighbor crying for help while her boyfriend or husband beats the living daylights out of her whilst yelling demeaning remarks, but yet the women stays in her hell of a situation becuase she also doesn't know any better. And because she stays, this child is learning that it's ok to hit a women, and use those same degrating words. Now say this same child is musically inclined. His severly low rated education supresses his extent of dialogue and vocabulary. The inadequate enviroment that he grew up in is also the only thing he knows. He rights a musically sung poem about this struggle using the few words that is the extent of his vocabulary. Unfortunately those words include bitch, ho, pimp, etc. The song becomes popular within his community of other restrained people- and by technological advances in the world of media and electronics- makes it's way into the mainstream.
They are then scolded and berated for revealing their truth, the truth the rest of the country and politicians have created for them. Because as we have all learned in this last 7 years, this country doesn not like to be presented with or shown any truth, especially the ones that points out the countries shortcoming. I honestly wouldn't know where to start or how to start in changing this vicious cycle except for bringing consistent attention to the masses. I would say do a live earth/live aid type concert, but the people that it would benefit wouldn't be able to afford to go. And that just brings us back to the hypocracy of it all. If maybe we could get a movement strong and big enough to bring around the clock attention, and the country grew some balls and shame of their political leaders, then maybe we can restructure and redesign the problems at the foundation and strengthen the architect of our weak societies.
