880 South Re-Established in 2005, was founded as the Floppy Rods in 1998. This 4 piece has made the transformation from a popular funk formula in the South Bay Area Alternative Rock scene to a Dub Rock household name. They combine the styles of Reggae, Soul & Rock N' Roll. This infusion of music is inspired by artists like Sublime, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Steely Dan & Bob Marley. 880 South has been showcased with headliner artists such as Slightly Stoopid, Fishbone, the Expendables & Bargain Music. The name 880 South comes from the California Interstate Highway that inspired frontman Luigi "Weege" Casaretto to write about his hometown follies & tales from his youth.
Songwriters Luigi Casaretto & Greg Medeiros have over 10 years of history together. They originally formed together the the Floppy Rods in 1998 along with Steve Shyshka. Their reputation was filled with wild parties, wild women & good times funk rock! Formulating the sounds of Funk, Jazz, and Rock would mold a very provocative guitar and rhythm section powered sound! This formula would later help bind the chemistry for 880 South’s new style. Front man “Weege” wrote all new material focused on his reggae & classic rock influences. Before leaving for Texas, Weege would seek out former Rods members Greg “G” Medeiros(bass) & Steve Shyshka(guitar) to help structure the new songs. The 3 collaborated in 2004 with Kasey Cox on drums with the goal to record a 4 song demo. These 4 songs were featured on myspace.com and their popularity on sublimearchive.com led to a huge increase in website hits & praising comments. The response was convincing enough for Weege to return to California in 2005 to give live music another go. In need of a fulltime drummer they brought back former Rods drummer Aaron Liebelt who would later engineer "Beware" and "Youth Bus Sessions". They reformed together as 880 South. As of November 2007 Aaron Liebelt refocused his attention on his engineering career and has parted ways with 880 South. The core of the songwriting talent has remained in tact and the band has now acquired 23 year old jazz drummer Nick Fishman.
Throughout the last 10 years this band has matured into a songwriting machine that focused heavily on lyrical content, compassion, and inspiration. A positive message is layered underneath all of the emotion and sarcasm. Priding themselves on their sense of humor, clever wit, and the occasional love song. 880 South can still turn it up and rock it live! Last December they released a 13-song album titled “Beware” that was recorded at Street Noise Studios in Northern California. Following a sellout CD release party at the Voo Doo Lounge, the album hit the Internet & stores December 7th 2006. Proudly, CD sales have reached across the entire United States & even countries such as Japan, Australia, the UK, & Canada. They are available on iTunes, Rhapsody.com, CD Baby, Left Coast Boardwear, 5446.jp (Japan), Groupietunes.com, Streetlight Records & Rasputin Records. On October 27th 2007 they performed at the 1st Annual "West Beach Music Festival" in Santa Barbara, CA. The show was hosted by Adam Carolla and featured bands such as A.L.O & Sugarcult. 880 South has also inked an endorsement deal with Left Coast Boardwear and are now officially managed by their CEO & Owner Clev Stiles.
Their sophomore effort titled "Youth Bus Sessions" is due out April 8th 2008. Featuring 14 original tracks. Containing songs recorded with all original members. Featured on the album is a remake of a 2005 880 South demo song titled "City Ditty", now titled "City Gone Mad" featuring Stefan Meissner and Clint Sobolik from the Whiskey Avengers/Language Arts Crew. The more popular favorites are songs such as "Apartment 28", "You Can Feel It Huh?", & "Baby Has Gotta Eat". Equipped now with professional management, a bulky fan base, & a brand new album 880 South is planning a national tour for Spring 2008. They hope to pick up some international dates in the year to come as well to reach their fans who can't catch a live show! Numerous internet tour date requests, emails & eventful.com's Demand It sticker have provided logistics for possible cities and dates. 880 South is using the modern internet world of the music business to their advantage.
