About Me
Live at The Rockit Room in San Francisco, CA 3/31/07
Hailing out of the bay area, representing San Jose, California, Relapse is a three person powerhouse dedicated to creating and performing some of the most cutting edge original rock the bay area has to offer. Relapse embodies a style of music that most would have trouble describing, yet few would not enjoy. The time will come when the whiney voices of self depreciating lyricists and they’re cookie cutter bands have all but died out, and there will be a surge of new music to replace them. This happens every ten years or so and it’s about time for another re-birth of our beloved rock and roll. Rock music has been transformed, renamed, and disestablished from it’s origin. However the attitude and the passion will never die. Relapse can be as hard, soft, poetic, disruptive, affective, happy, sad, thoughtful, and thoughtless and any other band, but they do so on their own terms. So, take what you will from Relapse.
The period of improvement, in the aforementioned definition , can only be described as stagnant period of original rock music. Rock and Roll is impossible identify these days. Music itself can never be restricted to labels and definitions, but more so by attitude, appearance, and soul. If Relapse could describe it’s music by labeling it as Reggae, Pop, Country, Metal, or Rap… it wouldn’t be considered Rock and Roll. The inspiration that creates Relapse derives from all forms of musical artists, genres, and images that have previously been mastered. Just like any other rock band, Relapse may claim their style is original, and to some extent, it is. You may not hear another band that sounds like Relapse but chances are, you will hear something from Relapse that sounds like something you already love. We as listeners, have already heard 90% of the best music we will ever hear in our lifetime. We can generally listen to a new band and relate them to the sound of an artist we’ve already heard. I’ve found it very difficult to describe in words what one band may sound like unless it involves comparing them to an already popularized artist. This is an epidemic that may never be neutralized. That said, most artists create a target audience by performing the style of music that will satisfy that demographic. A “sound†is now appointed to that band, and it’s in their best interest to continue adhering to this sound. Relapse has a sound as well. Relapse has many sounds. It’s not my business to declare whether the listener will like it or not. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But if you like either Rap, Metal, Country, Pop, Reggae, Rock and Roll, Polka or music in general, chances are you will enjoy some Relapse. The Pheez, Needles and Malosh are three strapping young lads whose musical career dates far back before they even knew of each other. Each individual realized at a young age that making music was better than fun.. it was easy. It came naturally and it came all too quickly. Each member had a strain of succesful musical ventures that matured them as musicians, performers, and humans. Though they may have been forced to terminate these projects for some reason or another, the disease had already infiltrated their system. Music is an affliction. It is a disease so strong, that once it is in your system, it’s there for forever. When the stars didn’t align for these three talented musicians in their respective outfits, there may have been some thoughts that destiny was to unfold in another manner. This was of course until fate stepped in. Though the dates may not be confirmed, during the summer of 2005, these three souls joined to form a band and hand over fist, exerted themselves deep into the disease known as music. There was a Relapse, and that is how they began..
