A Brief look into the creation of Pete’s Dj’ing history:
From the age of 10 I had a big interest in music getting a basic record deck for my bedroom, playing 7” singles (Michael Jackson etc.) My neighbour also gave me a record deck of the same make and that was when without realising it, I first started mixing (messing more like) with records.
A couple of years past and friends a little older than me who were at High school started to listen to Electro (Hip Hop). The whole scene really grabbed me as a kid (the DJ’ing, Breakdancing, Rapping & Graffiti), it was like nothing I’d ever heard before, and so went out and bought releases like ‘Street Sounds Electro’ records, tapes as soon as they were on the shelves in the music stores.
At about 14 I got myself a Memorex Hi-fi deck for £50 from Tandy, paying about £5 a week from my pocket money. These turntables were belt driven and had a rotary pitch control which was visable within the workings of the deck. This deck was the only affordable budget option as Technics 1200’s were too pricy.
Soon after I purchased a Realistic 2 channel mixer from Tandy also £50 and was soon trying to copy the Scratching sounds, techniques I’d heard from records such as Herby Hancock’s – ‘Rocket’, Arthur Bakers – ‘Breakers Revenge’, Time Zone – 'Wildstyle' and of Dj’s such as Home Town legend ‘3 Jaze’ (who’s Mixtapes were a true inspiration), Cash Money & Jazzy Jeff etc.
After a couple of years struggling to master the art of Scratching (as there was no tutorial videos, books in them days), I then started to learn how to beat match as the time of Chicago House, Detroit Techno & Acid House was really starting to get big in the late ‘80’s.
This style of music was blended together rather than scratched, so the need for cutting & scratching tracks into one another was only heard with Hip Hop & Rap style music and the scratching was put over the top just to spice up the track.
At 16 I started doing loads of house party’s at my Graffiti friends house Paul Bryenton (Jester), I’d bring my decks & mixer, plug it all in to his set up and we would just blast out the tunes all night.
My first big break came when I was 17, as on the 16th June 1990 my Graffiti friend ‘Jatinder Singh (Cover)’ set up his own Rave night in Huddersfield called Forbidden Zone, I was added to the flyer under my Graffiti / Tag name of the time ‘Creator’ along side DJ’s Paul Oakenfold, Paul Trouble Anderson, Chad Jackson and T.O.N.Y (from the Hacienda), this night was a sell out which really put the pressure on but an amazing experience.
From there I’ve gone on to Dj’ing all over the UK and abroad as well as doing Radio shows on local Pirate stations: Curfew, Jive, WSR & legal station Phoenix FM.
Over the years I’ve played a vast selection of music styles, like: Electro (Hip Hop), Chicago House, Detroit Techno, Acid House, Warehouse, Funk, Hip Hop, Rap, Breaks, Breakbeat, Jungle, Drum & Bass, UK House, Italian house, Garage, Hardcore, Piano House, Speed Garage, 2 Step, Trance, Bouncy / Scouse House, Bassline House & Electro House.
The Styles i mainly DJ out now are:
Bouncy/Scouse House
Bassline House/4x4
Old Skool/Club Classics
Funky House/Electro
Dj Names:
My DJ name ‘Monsoon’ came from one of my favourite UK Hip Hop Groups called ‘Black Radical MK2’, their track was called ‘Monsoon’ which was a big favourite with me.
My DJ name ‘Agro DJ's’ was thought up by Mark Aldrich a fellow Agro DJ Himself, we mainly have this DJ name as a double act when DJ'ing on the Bassline House, 4x4 scene.
My DJ name ‘Glennon’ is used in Back 2 Back sets with Mark Aldrich, Djing as 'Aldrich & Glennon' on the Bouncy House scene.
