Missing In Manchester @ Music Box - Dj Absolute
..
Below, are questions and answers from a recent interview for ID Radio
1......How did you get interested in DJ'ing and when did you start?
I've always had an interest in music, and an even bigger interest in entertaining people......Dj'ing was the obvious choice.
I started when i was 13 yr's old....back in my bedroom listening to herbie hancock and trying to scratch on an old Binatone record player....when i was 14 i'd saved up all my pocket money for 6 month's and bought myself a set of deck's (one of those old mobile sets, with 2 deck's, an 8,track player and a mixer, all built in to one big box).....my friend and I used to carry it to the local youth club and dj to the other kid's...(but they still made me pay the 14p entry Ba****ds lol).....i was instantly hooked.
I got my first nightclub residency at "the garden of eden" when i was 15 yrs old and i've been a professional dj / producer ever since.
2.....Do you remember what your first vinyl was?
Yes, but if i told you, i'd lose all my street cred lol.
3.....Where's your favourite place to play and why?
Anywhere there's a good crowd........Bad attitudes just ruin a good night.!
4.....What kind of music do you love and play the most?
I play old skool, scouse house, funky house, hard house & trance.....but my favourite (when i'm playing to a crowd) has to be happy hardcore.....there is something about the atmosphere at a hardcore gig that you just don't get anywhere else, i guess it's the energy that comes with it.......(Rave Safe people.!!!)
5.....What equipment do you prefer DJing with?
Technic's 1200's and Vinyl !!!! Always.!!!!
6.....If you could choose on of your tunes to represent yourself, what would it be? Could you choose one?
Very good question......if your talking about one of my tunes in my collection, it would have to be "sounds of blackness - Optimistic".......it says it all about me...stay optimistic, no matter what happen's keep your head held high.
if your talking about one of my tunes that i've produced, i would have to say "Dj Absolute - Crazy Love" (RIPP-toff records)....it's full of love and romance...(just like me.!! hahaha)
7.....What's more important, not necessarily for you, but in general, mixing technique or track selection?
Definately track selection.!!....you could be the best beat mixer in the world but if you play s**t tunes, nobody will dance.!!
8.....What pushed you into turntabilism?which a lot of dj's fear trying due to the difficulty of mastering it, do you think that knowing when scratching is performed and you havn't mastered it there is no disguising that you are shit at it is a main factor of this? (ha ha ha bet you love this question).?
I was learning how to scratch long before trying to mix.....I understand when your learning how to scratch and you get to a point where you think your good...then you want the world to hear it....(this is where people get it wrong)........for me...(as it should be for every dj)....scratching is personal xpression....(like a guitar solo)...It's a feeling.
My advice to anybody who want's to scratch in a set is this...:-
1....scratching should compliment the music....Not take over it......NEVER have it louder than the music..(people are dancing to the music..not your scratching.!!)....and if you mess up only the trainspotters will notice lol.
2....if your not very compitent, or your timing is off, just do small bursts...quick 2 or 3 second lick's, keep them in beat and people will
love it.
3....Practice at home...NOT in front of a crowd.....if you mess up a scratch, just say "Oh Well" and leave it.....Don't carry on till you get
it right..(see 1)
4....NEVER EVER Scratch over vocals..(this goe's for MC's too.!! Don't rap over vocals)....it confuses the crowd....they don't know what to listen to and loose interest.
5....MOST IMPORTANT.!!!!....DON'T BUY DVD'S OR BOOKS THAT TELL YOU HOW TO DO IT.!!!!.....LEARN IT.!!...DEVELOP YOUR OWN STYLE.!!....(remember...if your copying somebody then somebody else is already doing it.!!!....so why should they hire you??)
9.....How/why did you make the step from DJing to producing?
This is easy to answer.....for years i was travelling all over the country doing 6 / 8 gig's a week..(thursday to sunday)....the rest of the time i was on the golf course....but in winter the golf course was shut, so i needed something to do.....a friend of mine offered me some cheap recording equiptment, and then with the help of Carl Parker, Rick Jones, Pete Monsoon & Jason Ellis (who taught me the basic's)...i was hooked....I've never played golf since.
Producing is now my full time job....I'm producing top name artist's now such as Natasha Hamilton (Attomic Kitten), and i'm loving
every minute of it.
10.....You were witness to and participated in something pretty groundbreaking events, did you realise that at the time that you were involved in something that might take over the world?
Not at the time no.....I was just having fun, we all were.!!.....it makes me feel good that i've touched so many people tho.

12.....Were there particular labels or producers back then that you favoured?
Not really......Even to this day, I only play tunes that get the reation i'm looking for......(NO NEGATIVE FREQUENCIES !!...HAPPY PEOPLE ONLY haha).....if a tune kick's...I'll play it...don't care who made it.
13.....With the mainstream popularity of digital music and the increase of quality DJ equipment aimed at professional DJs, do you see vinyl, and vinyl DJs becoming a rare breed in years to come?
I hope not, but it is a possibility, because the people who make the equiptment know that almost everybody download's music.....that's why cd's deck's are so popular, so it's no wander that inventions such as I-Pod mixers are now emerging....... sure it's cheaper than vinyl....but it's killing turntablism ... and record shops, and producer's...(but the goverment is doing as much to kill the club scene anyway that one day it will probably end.).....I was at a wedding recently and the dj had a microphone and a laptop with windows media player....what is the world coming to????? (And to the owner of Limewire i'd like to say F**KOFF.!!!).
14.....Tell me one thing most people don't know about DJs.
To answer that i'd have to know what most people already know.
15.....Share a secret/Tip for the Studio...
It's all in the beats.!!! (thats what they dance to)
16.....What is the best/worst experience you've had?
As a Dj, the best experience has to be Life @ Bowlers - Feb 96 "Space"....standing on top of a 20ft speaker stack with thousands of people shouting my name.....(Lifetape 13).
The worse was 1 hr into a 4 hr set (I won't mention where) one of the needle's broke, and there was no spare.....you can imagine the rest.
17.....What are your plans for the future?
Work hard, Party harder, love my family as much as they love me.
18.....Describe yourself in five words.
Energetic, Confident, Happy, Ambitious & Funny.
19.....Words of Wisdom?
You may fall many times in life....but your only a faliure, if you REFUSE to get up.!!!! (I live my life by it)
