What is Dystonia?
Well that's what I've had for the last 5 years - cervical dystonia - but I don't let it get me down. If you have or know someone with dystonia - lets talk - please post to my blog and count me as a friend.
So what the is Dystonia?
Dystonia is a movement disorder that causes the muscles to contract and spasm involuntarily. The neurological mechanism that makes muscles relax when they are not in use does not function properly. Opposing muscles often contract simultaneously as if they are “competing” for control of a body part. The involuntary muscle contractions force the body into repetitive and often twisting movements as well irregular postures which can cause much pain.
Although there are multiple forms of dystonia and the symptoms of these forms may outwardly appear quite different, the element that all forms share is involuntary muscle contractions
This is good link for ST!
Cervical dystonia (A/K/A Spasmodic Torticollis)is a focal dystonia that affects the neck and sometimes the shoulders.
Symptoms include involuntary contracting of the neck muscles, causing abnormal movements and awkward posture of the head and neck.
The movements may be sustained (“tonic”), jerky (“clonic”), or a combination.
Cervical dystonia may result in considerable pain and discomfort.
Treatments include oral medications, botulinum toxin injections, surgery, and complementary therapies.
Cervical Dystonia affects people of all walks of life with a variety of circumstances. This space exists to help you find answers, understand a loved one, enjoy camaraderie and improve your quality of life. You're welcome to search through my videos to learn how to better cope with this very disruptive disorder.

Try not to Laugh

I'd like to meet:

By joining together, we can show those with the power to make a difference that we have just as many people with dystonia that need help as those with Parkinson's and other diseases of a similar nature.

For years many physicians thought of Cervical dystonia as being psychological. IT IS NOT. Nor is it Parkinson’s disease, nor nor Cerebral Palsy nor Muscular Dystrophy. This confusion is why Cervical dystonia is often misdiagnosed and/or undiagnosed.

WHAT CAUSES Cervical dystonia?

Neurologists believe those with dystonia are born with a predisposition. In approximately 50% of the cervical dystonia population, there is a family history of hand or head tremors (familial or essential tremors).

An IMPORTANT POINT TO REMEMBER is that many with dystonia exhibit denial. This can exacerbate the symptoms and make them worse. It can create a “FLIGHT OF FRIGHT” mode which can then lead to more anger and anxiety and this only causes deeper symptoms and depression.

Acceptance of dystonia is all-important. Dystonia can be devastating but, with regular treatment and attention, YOU CAN LEAD A PRODUCTIVE LIFE! Life’s habits may have to change, but “The only thing permanent in life is change”. Think positive and good luck to you! I hope you find this information helpful.
