Watch out ! Here comes rock and roll... or as one reviewer put it "horror music for the masses".
Musically, Whittlesea has been compared with the likes of Placebo, The Sex Pistols, Future Heads, Descendants, The Smiths and even Joy Division and The Cure. With moods ranging from dark and melodic to indie poprock and punk here is a band which is difficult to confine to one corner of the musical spectrum. In some ways this is what pop punk should sound like, punk with a pop feel, no whiny nasal teenagers here. However, this is also a band which is not afraid to adopt a sensitive tone with thought provoking lyrics covering a variety of subjects from lost loves to strange fantasies and events.
Vocally, Paul has been described as a clash between Johnny Rotten and David Bowie, comparisons with Peter Murphy and the Barenaked Ladies have also been cited. A singing style that is theatrical and even a little spooky, creepy yet poppy, a voice you either love or hate. One reviewer even posed the question: "is the singer Jello Biafra's cousin ?"
But everyone has a critic and "if Billy Joel tried to 'rock' it might result in this train wreck" fits that bill then it also goes a long way to describe the wide variety of musical styles this band is capable of producing.
