You learn that the only way to get rock-star power as a girl is to be a groupie and bare your breast

About Me

This lovely drawing is by Marissa Christina
I'm Mish. I was born and raised in this fine city of Chicago. Right now I live in an lofty old studio with Basil, a rather lanky black kitty. Chicago will always be home but I recently relized that I don't want to live in the United States forever. We'll just leave it at that.
When I was a teenager I hung out at raves, underage gay clubs and $7 shows at the Fireside and Metro. I dressed in crazy outfits and did crazy things, but didn't we all? I have a lot of good memories of places The Royal, Red Dog, Centrum and Randolph Street Gallery (anyone remember that place? A short-lived but completely awesome spot. I wonder what ever happened to Zoe Orgasma...?) I love the flux of this city and seeing all the faces and talents that come and go.
I'm currently doing my student teaching at a Chicago Public High School, the last requirement for my a B.A. in Secondary Education at DePaul. The plan is teach English at CPS for a start, and depending on what happens, I might want to teach at university level too. I'm not really sure how I feel about that right now or what I want to get my Masters in. I'll just have to see how it goes.
I'm very passionate and supportive of D.I.Y. (do-it-yourself) culture. This can mean anything from supporting local businesses over large corporations to creating your own products and media if you don't see yourself represented. In Fall of 2005, I organized an event called Ephemera Festival. It was a lot of fun, and it gave independent artists and media-makers a chance to show their work. I'll do another one someday, but I'm not sure when.
I've been publishing a zine since 1995. Zines, if you're curious, are small independent publications that done out of love and interest rather than for profit. If youwant to learn more about the underground press, Zine World is a good source of information. Mine is called Indigo , and it's basically a collection of cut & paste art and stories about my life. I also make greeting cards and occasionally model for art classes, photographers & fashion shows when the opportunity arises.
I guess you can say I'm an "indoor kid", but I can be very extroverted and outspoken when I feel like it. I love to play Mad Libs and watch Unsolved Mysteries on DVD and play Bust-A-Move 2000 and read VICE magazine. I enjoy a meaningful conversation as well as a silly one. I have quite a few stories to tell, but the trick is getting them out of me. A charming disposition and a couple gin & tonics is a good start.
