WHAT'S A THEREMIN?
The Theremin (originally pronounced te-re-min), is one of the first electronic instruments. Invented by Russian physicist Léon Theremin in 1919, it was called the thereminvox & also known as the aetherphone.
Unique in that it is not touched while played, the Theremin uses proximity & capacity of objects around two antennae to control pitch & volume. The Theremin is in fact a gesture controlled monophonic synthesiser. Single pitches are created by proximity to the vertical antennae on the right, with volume controlled by the curved one to the player's left (left-handed models have also be made).
Technically, the sound is created by two internal oscillators, one of fixed pitch, the other varied by changes in hand position. As the hand gets closer, the capacity to absorb more radio frequencies increases, raising the pitch. This causes heterodyning or "beating" between oscillators which creates pitched sine waves.
With up to seven octaves in range & no fixed note positioning, a Theremin demands considerable stillness, fine muscle control & pitch recall of the player. Practice can reward the performer with a highly expressive, yet infinitely adjustable instrument.
Depending on environment, Brontide performs on Moog Etherwave Pro or standard, employing additional effects & ocassionally MIDI conversion or triggers.
Please stand clear of Theremin players during performance... you will affect the instrument's sound if too close!
