The
War of Spanish Succession
and
Pirates of the Caribbean:

In the late 1600's, Spain had immense wealth and power. Italy, the Philippines, and most of the Western Hemisphere belonged to them. Great quantities of gold were shipped out from the Americas to their homeland. Spain was the richest country in the world!

Unfortunately, when the Spanish King Charles II died, he had no heir. He did, however, have relatives in other countries, like France and Italy, who squabbled and squabbled about who gets the inheritance. For political reasons, other countries joined in the squabble too, and before you knew it, there was a war!

The War of Spanish Succession (1702-1713) was essentially between England and their allies (Dutch, Austrians, and Prussians) and the Spain-France partnership.

The English navy pretty much wiped out the Spanish/French navy early in the war. Okay, now our immensely wealthy empire is getting worried! So much is at stake!! All that gold from the Americas! The lavish comforts like silk and spices from the Pacific trade routes! They didn't want to lose their empire!!

In desparation, the Spanish/French decided to commission private vessels (privateers) to attack English merchant ships instead! The English retaliated by sending out their privateers to attack Spain's and France's merchant ships. The need for privateers rose, and they were paid very well for their efforts. Often, privateers could keep up to 90% of the plunder. At one point, England allowed them 100%!

When the war ended in 1713, so did privateering. Jobs for sailors were just

not in demand anymore, and tens of thousands of privateers suddenly found themselves destitute.

To make matters worse, hurricanes had recently ravaged the Caribbean Islands and tore apart ships and towns. The English (ex-privateers and others), were not only stranded in Jamaica by lack of work and lack of ship, but also found themselves with another big issue. Spain continued to torment them, seizing their ships at will and accusing the crew of smuggling if they should find even one Spanish coin on board. Not a difficult thing to do, since Spanish coins were the currency of the Caribbean. Prisoners were often abused, as you might imagine. Deeply frustrated with destitute poverty and Spanish bullying tactics, some ex-privateers decided to take it into their own hands to do something about it. They fled from Jamaica to the Bahamas, which had no current government, to begin the Pirates of the Caribbean.

Pirates

Blackbeard
Methinks ye already knows 'bout ol' Blackbeard, Edward Thatch/Teach. Fer twas he, indeed, who fled

from Jamaica ta the Bahamas with Hornigold ta start a life o' piracy. He made his surely game by intimidation, that he did. Boldly attired, densely clad in weaponry, fearsome countenance--howe'er, known ta ne'er go back on his word, n' strongly so. -BB

Henry Avery
(Late 1600's) After serving in the Royal Navy (where sailors were treated like prisoners at the time), he joined a merchant ship which was held over for many months in Spain by that crazy inbred King Charles II. Avery led a mutiny to freedom, and piracy became the order of the day. He flew two pirate flags with the same symbol, one with a red background; one with a black background. A very successful pirate, and a legend in the Golden Age of Piracy (early 1700's)

Calico Jack (Rackham)
So named because of his flamboyant attire. Very successful pirate in the Golden Age of Piracy, along with the very famous female pirates, Anne Bonny and Mary Read.

Edward Low
Mean, nasty pirate. Stories too gruesome to tell, for there may be children nearby.

Stede Bonnet
Well to do gentleman who decided one day to become a pirate (His friends thought he

was crazy!). So he bought a ship and crew and started a mediocre life of piracy.

Tom Tew
How to be a pirate! First ye buys a letter o' marque and tells e'eryone yer a privateer. Then, when yer out ta seas, ye tells e'eryone yer a pirate! Well, it worked fer Thomas Tew. He also sailed with Henry Avery on his second voyage. Was shot n' killed n' his crew captured, but released when Henry Avery's crew came ta the rescue.
