A LIFE LIKE A FAIRY TALE
Nikos Veropoulos White Feather is a composer, songwriter, performer and recording artist who also sings and plays a large variety of musical instruments, from ancient civilizations to the Middle Ages, from shamanistic rituals to modern electronics.
Although his specialty is World Music and ethnic percussion, his compositions combine elements from many different styles of music, ranging from minimalistic or classical forms, to dancing rhythms, from melodic lyrical ballads to tribal, experimental fusion and world traditions.
But above all, he is a true Rembetis in the heart, with his baglama and his bohemian life style.
Born in Athens, Greece in 1954, he started his professional career in music playing guitar and drums in a rock band during his military service in Greece, at the age of twenty.
Two years later he decided to abandon his homeland in order to expand his horizons and live new experiences by traveling, learning and performing around the world.
The name “White Feather” was given to him by Grey Wolf, a Cherokee medicine man, after Nikos Veropoulos lived for almost 20 years in the United States together with the American Indians in various reservations around the country.
From the United States he traveled extensively to many countries in five continents, before settling down in Brazil, in 2003.
His meetings with remarkable people during his world traveling in search of truth, spirituality and life experience, proved to be more than helpful to the developing of his personal identity, beliefs and inspirations. People like the Cherokee medicine man Grey Wolf, His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet, OSHO, Commandante Marcos of the Zapatistas, his wife Cristina and a few others who later became adopted members of his extended family added important influence to his way of thinking and creating for the rest of his life.
Nikos Veropoulos has been a recording artist of MINOS Records (Greece), STATUS QUO VADIS and VANITY Records (USA), PAN Records (Holland), and some independent labels, creating a large discography of his own compositions on personal CDs.
Recently EPIMATEO Records (Brazil) re- issued his entire discography and will continue with new releases until 2009.
He has recorded as a guest on several CDs of other artists, has written the score for the motion picture of Dimitris Vellios “What the Moon Saw”, the music for the documentaries “Tlalocan” and “The Pan Macedonian Union”, music for the Red Clay Theater Productions in New York including plays by Dario Fo and Jean Cocteau, and three books of poems: “Aftosineidissi”, “Lasponeira” and “White Feather”, published in the USA and Greece.
Nikos Veropoulos has appeared on many television shows and the Greek National TV Channel ET 1 has produced a documentary about his life, which was shown nationally and in Cyprus in March and October 2004 respectively.
He was featured and reviewed on music magazines like EAR, SOUND CHOICE, ROLLING STONE, OPTION (USA), TP of Switzerland, DIFONO, ATHINORAMA, METRO, TZAZZ & JAZZ, DOWNTOWN (Greece) and many news papers including the N.Y Times, the N.Y. Post, Village Voice, N.Y Newsday, the National Herald, Proini (USA), Eleftherotypia, Athens News, Ependytis (Greece), the Kerala News of India and many others.
Nikos Veropoulos is included in John Schaeffer’s NEW SOUNDS music encyclopedia, together with hundreds of well - known artists, such as, David Byrne, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Ravi Shankar, Pink Floyd, Kitaro, The Beatles, Peter Gabriel, Frank Zappa and others. In the American continent Nikos Veropoulos lived, worked and created music for more than twenty years and his collaborations with world famous artists who either, lived or just passed from there, were many.

Nikos Veropoulos formed and directed to this day five musical ensembles of his own, with which he recorded and performed in different periods of time:
In 1986 in New York he met Amelia Parra, a Mexican dancer and musician, who, just like him was specializing in ancient civilizations of the Americas, thus XOCHI MAYA was born, a duo, oriented towards pre- Colombian music and ritual dance.
In 1996, again in New York, he formed the group I REMBETES TIS ASTORIAS, a “Rembetiki kompania”(ensemble specializing in the urban blues of Greece called “the Rembetiko”).
The repertory of this group was strictly Rembetika in their original lyrics and rhythm, some of them dating from the late 1800’s.
Nikos Veropoulos’ passion for live performances led him to form another group, this time in Athens, Greece, the Ensemble OXYMORON, in 1998.
Here he concentrated mostly in introducing by playing live his own compositions, but also another kind of music he highly respected and specialized in, the music of the Middle Ages.
The number four group ARROWHEAD was formed by White Feather in Athens, in 2002.
ARROWHEAD specialized in playing live the music of the American Indians, both their traditional and their contemporary songs.
His last ensemble BANDA XINGU was founded in Brazil in 2004, and it’s story follows below.
Nikos Veropoulos performed extensively in many countries and participated in many music festivals, at times alone, with special guests and friends or with his groups, for audiences of diverse cultural backgrounds.
BANDA XINGU
Just like Nikos Veropoulos' previous bands "ORCHESTRA OF THE SKY"
"REMBETES TIS ASTORIAS", "OXYMORON" and "ARROWHEAD", this one also marked the end of an era and as of November 2006 is history.
Formed and founded in the city of Aquiraz (State of Ceara'), in North Eastern Brazil, in November 2004 by Nikos Veropoulos White Feather, who was the leader of the band, the lead singer, percussionist, guitarist, harmonica player, composed the music and wrote the lyrics for the band's repertory, BANDA XINGU proposed new musical ideas and rocked the place for the period of two years that was active in the region.
BANDA XINGU started its live performances in February 2005 and released its first CD entitled "Jangadeiro's Blues" in May 2005.
The second Cd entitled "Raizes" (Roots) followed soon after, the same year, and was sold out in three months!
The name of the band came from the Xingu National Park and Reserve in Mato Grosso where various Brazilian indian tribes live and most of the lyrics in both CDs are part of a general protest, supporting the rights of these people and of all indigenous tribes of Brazil and of the rest of the world.
The music consists of original compositions and it is very unique, it belongs to the "World Music Fusion" genre, a wild mix of vocals, instruments and sounds, always based on inspired melodic lines.
The band uses various styles and combinations with Rock, Reggae, Bossanova and other Brazilian rhythms.
Several talented musicians with good chemistry, unique repertory and a vision, a sound and light engineer, their friends and good management were the basic reasons of BANDA XINGU's success.
