My Word of Bass & Keys
I'm an intermediate player (I'm 40 - don't look it) who has been playing bass and keyboards on and off for approximately 10 years. I also play Highland Bagpipes (from my military days) and mess around with the Irish Uilleann.
I am very much just a "plug in and play" kind of bass player but depending on the gig you may find me playing bass with a Roland PK-5 midi foot pedal board triggered into my MicroX Synth.
This allows me to play virtually any sound including doublestops, melodies, and deep MIDI triggered synth bass or even drum patterns (all tiggered from my pedals while I play bass). Geddy Lee from Rush does something similar to this. Often people wonder where all these sounds are coming from.
I have played with a number of different bands in London, Scarborough, Hamilton, Mississauga, and Burlington.
I have studied bass (upright and electric) with the likes of Victor Wooten; Anthony Wellington; Steve Bailey; Chuck Rainey; Stu Hamm; Adam Nitti; Richard Bona; Regi, Joseph, Roy, Rudy Wooten; and timing with J.D. Blair.
Currently I am studying bass with Mike Milligan a well known Toronto Jazz player.
I am constantly mixing up tracks, riffs, loops, samples, and layering up different sounds and effects with Cubase, ProTools, Ableton Live and Reason.
My main software program is Reason 3.0. which I play live through my botttom keyboard. I have collected over a million sound banks over the years from virtually all makes and models keyboards and drum machines.
I have a mini studio at home so I am able to record at home or on site. I often write bass riffs/tracks for people upon request.
I play just about anything 70s, 80s, 90s,Classic Rock, Alternative, Pop, Disco, Dance, Funk, Rap, Metal, Blues, Hip Hop, Jazz, Christian, Gospel, Congregational, Whatever.
Mostly I enjoy playing the top 40, the kind of music you would hear if you were listening to radio stations such as Q107 or Y108.
Currently I am in a very serious classic rock music project with Brian Corbett who was the lead guitar player from Freedom Trian who has now started a new band with myself and other players. On sunday mornings I can usually be found playing Contemporary Christian Rock (Creed meets U.2. kind of stuff) at my local church in Hamilton which keeps me busy.
I will collaborate, record, and write bass riffs on original music. I am only interested in playing "live" in an original band provided I like the music. I have to have that warm and fuzzy feeling inside or forget it. I'm not interested in doing orginals if it just ends up being a basement thing going no where. If there are clear live gigs in the picture I'm in.
My friends call me Boo mostly because they can't pronounce my last name. (The name is French Im not). I was born and raised in Scarborough also know these days as Da Hood. When I go home to visit the folks I usually have to wear a bullet proof vest.
I am not a jobber. I have a day job that pays well. I have my own transportation. I am available most weeknights and weekends. Just try and give me as much notice as you can along with your set list.
I have a very professional attitude and I do not have an ego. I can play with just about any personality anywhere anyplace.
