As a side project of Artist Charles Benefiel, An Atlas Of Stars draws its inspiration from the recesses of wilderness while eluding the boundaries of traditional music. The compositions are made with sampled loops and processed with filter effects that create an ethereal and haunting atmosphere. Ghostly and dreamlike, the music swirls around the mind like distant memories of fantastic landscapes bereft of natural sounds. Time ceases to have meaning as it creates long meditative fade-ups to pieces that can stretch on for 30 minutes or more.
As a visual artist, Benefiel has received much notariety and has lived all over the world. As an artist he is intrigued by systems theory, and is a believer in mathematics as a pure language and catalyst for intelligent change.
His mission also involves heightening the public’s awareness of the calming aspects of art and music in everyday life, as well as the need for simplified living in contemporary society. Charles Benefiel is the head of The Sound Earth, a non-profit dedicated to environmental art and acoustic ecology, and Cluster Theory, an organization mixing art and the sciences. He also runs Richmond Mills, a 250,000 sq ft. factory converted into artist space in Philadelphia.
