Chris Kase is a jazz trumpeter, flugelhornist, composer and educator who has resided in Madrid, Spain since 1997. He has performed and/or recorded with many well known jazz artists such as: The Mingus Big Band, Adam Nussbaum, Kenny Wheeler, Bob Mintzer, The Bird of Paradise Orchestra, Steve Coleman, Chick Corea, Steve Wilson, Don Braden, Grant Stewart, Bruce Barth, David Berkman, Al Foster and Perico Sambeat, among others.ODE, his fifth CD as a leader, will be released by Nuba Records in 2008.
Presently, Chris maintains an active performance schedule throughout Spain, performing with some of Spain's finest jazz groups (Abe Rábade GHU! Project, Mikel Andueza Superquintet, Bob Sands Big Band, Llibert Fortuny Elèctric Big Band). He is professor of jazz trumpet at Musikene , the Superior Conservatory of Music of the Basque Country in San Sebastián, Spain.
Kase is the author of Twenty-first Century Technique , a method book of modern technical exercises for trumpet inspired by Technical Studies for the Cornet by H.L. Clarke. This book is endorsed by trumpet giants such as Dave Douglas, Randy Brecker, Kenny Wheeler, Bobby Shew and Mike Metheny and was published in September, 2006 by Balquhidder Music (Los Angeles) and is distributed worldwide by Carl Fischer.
Since 1994, more than thirty of Kase’s original compositions have been recorded and released. His talent as a composer has been recognized by the Sociedad General de Autores y Editores (SGAE), the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), the Michigan Council for the Arts, Billboard Magazine and the John Lennon Song Writing Contest.
Kase was one of fifteen trumpeters chosen from all over the world to participate in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition, held in Washington, DC in 1997. Some of Kase's more contemporary music can be found on his electric page:
