PRUSSIA: A BAND, A BUZZ, A BELIEF; A POSITIVE BREATH OF FRESH AIR THAT BLEW IN FROM BERLIN IN THE LATE 80S BUT WHICH HARKS BACK MORE THAN A CENTURY TO THE DAYS WHEN A PARTICULAR TYPE OF FOLK MUSIC WHOSE ELEMENTS - BOTH CLASSICAL AND BAROQUE - WERE ADOPTED BY MINSTRELS AND POETS WHO WORKED AND WOVE THEM INTO SOMETHING ALTOGETHER MORE SIMPLE, MORE IMMEDIATE, INFUSING THEM WITH THEIR OWN KIND OF MAGIC. THAT SAME SPIRIT OF ALCHEMY WAS ABROAD WHEN THE BAND PRUSSIA APPROPRIATED SIMILAR MUSICAL ELEMENTS; AMPLIFIED THEM, ADDED SOME DARK VOCALS - AND SOME DARKER SUBJECT MATTER –AND PROCEEDED TO PRODUCE A SOUND UNLIKE ANYTHING IN ROCK THAT HAD COME BEFORE IT - OR HAS COME ALONG SINCE: SOMETHING FAMILIAR AND YET TOTALLY UNIQUE. TWENTY YEARS ON AND THAT SPIRIT IS UNDIMMED, THE SOUND AS ORIGINAL, REFRESHING AND UPLIFTING AS IT WAS WHEN THEY STARTED, A SOUND WHICH, TWENTY YEARS FROM NOW, WILL BE NO LESS EXCITING. BUT WHY WAIT THAT LONG? THE NEW CD IS CALLED “PAIN AND HALLELUJAHâ€. CHECK IT OUT FOR YOURSELF.By John Stewart (London, 2008-02-10)
