Murphy's Downtown Saloon

If you're walking around Florida Atlantic University's Boca Raton campus en route to class, fliers for college night at Murphy's Downtown Saloon stick to your shoes and the sidewalks. The extensive advertising campaign appears to be a success, with throngs of students showing up every Tuesday, making this traditional Irish pub the epicenter of young Boca nightlife. Being listed on Maxim magazine's Web site as one of the best Florida bars may have gone to the management's head, as the pub now gets the VIP treatment by sticking two lengthy velvet ropes in front of the thick, brown wooden doors.
Most attendees either stack themselves deep into leather booths or take to the small dance floor, where guys dance, show their flexibility and practice pelvic thrusts by bouncing agile ladies off their laps to the beat. If you're not doing those PG-13 lap dances, other entertainment comes by way of pool tables, darts, virtual boxing, video games and several TVs. Day-Glo pink and green shooters in test tubes teeter on trays carried by svelte, belly-baring barmaids and get sucked down with a pucker by willing drinkers. If you're feeling famished, bar snacks like so-called garbage fries and traditional pub fare help you develop your freshman 15 without much effort. On other nights of the week, Murphy's widens the age demo a little with karaoke with Marioke on Mondays, and on Fridays from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., ladies drink for $1 a pop. -- Terra Sullivan (January 19, 2006)Hours: Happy hour 11 a.m.-7 p.m. dailyDETAILS
