The year of the JAG is coming. And if you don’t know about JAG, you aren’t in the know. Just A Girl, also known as JAG, is THE hot, new girl group out of Jacksonville, Florida. When you think of the Florida music scene, Miami immediately comes to mind. Jacksonville traditionally has not been a frontrunner as source of music entertainment. But that is all about to change. A new JAG out of Jacksonville is about to take center stage and put the city on the map for musical reasons.
Just A Girl includes members Charlie Watson, Bree Baker, and Nina Moody. Friends since middle and high school, Just A Girl is not just another girl group. Coming together as friends, they weren’t hand picked to make a group the way that some groups are put together today in this age of reality TV. Their friendship and camaraderie shows both in their unified drive to succeed and their common interests.
JAG members not only display a hungry attitude, they are also very grateful to be where they are and to be facing the enormous opportunity set before them. JAG intends to maintain the same thankfulness and humility throughout their careers. All the girls are ironically the babies in their supportive families. But leaving family, school, friends and familiarity took a sense of courage as the ladies came to Atlanta to break into the entertainment business.
Charlie was pursuing a solo career in New York. When she returned to Atlanta, she met up with a producer she had previously worked with named Walter “Mucho†Scott. From there they decided to form a girl group so she returned to Florida to scoop up friends Bree and Nina from Florida A&M University (FAMU). After only a year in Atlanta, Just A Girl was introduced to and signed by Front 1 Entertainment headed by Entrepreneur, Joel Peavy and shortly thereafter got a deal with Dallas Austin’s Rowdy Records. Only the second girl group to work under the auspices of Austin, JAG has studied and been influenced by groups like Destiny’s Child, TLC, Pussycat Dolls as well as superstar dancer/singers Michael Jackson, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Usher, Aaliyah and Ciara. Their tastes in vocalists are as varied as Mariah Carey and Alannis Morisette.
Collectively, Just A Girl is the fun, cool and sometimes goofy girls that people love being around. They know it because folks make it a point to tell them. “The group experience is something we enjoy because being in a group allows you to share your experiences among friends and partake of one another’s strengths. We pride ourselves on the fact that we weren’t handpicked. but rather came together as friends.†These somewhat ‘girly tomboys’ styles compliment each other well, but their vocal blend is also quite harmonious. Charlie, Bree and Nina each have three distinct voices but they all blend very well. Nina has a soft, high voice. Charlie has a rich middle tone and Bree has a strong mid, low voice. On the stage, they all represent singularly and feed off of Bree’s high energy. Nina’s stage presence is subtle and sexy and Charlie is a combination of both.
As Just A Girl’s senior member, Charlie is described by the others as bossy and the mama of the group, while she says that she is silly, cool and down to earth. Her early musical exposure came from playing Clarinet in the band and singing in the chorus in school. Charlie likes all musical styles, and her long term goals include acting and opening a restaurant. Indicative of behavior of one who is more mature, Charlie often takes the lead in the affairs of the group.
Bree has a mad swag. This social butterfly gets along with the guys just as easily as she does with the girls. Her interests range the gamut from fashion design to playing sports. With lots of hip hop and dance under her belt, she has also modeled. All of these things are part of the reason that Nina describes Bree as flamboyant and trendy.
The baby of the bunch, Nina is a self described prissy girl. This good girl is a little shy and very caring. Her quiet innocence may be observed in the groups down time, but when she takes the stage the innocence is definitely downplayed. She began singing in the church at age five where her mother played keyboard. Some of Nina’s likes are shopping, spending time with family, chilling on the beach and attending concerts.
Describing themselves, Just A Girl states, “We’re called just a girl first, because we’re girly, we like to have fun. We like to be creative and get all dressed up…we love shopping and we sometimes can get emotional, but at the end of the day we’re just girls.â€
With hot song titles like “So Hot,†“Juicy Fruit,†“Hate Harder,†and “What is Your Sexy,†it is evident that JAG does not lack the confidence that will catapult their career. Many of the songs also cover the ups and downs of relationships and all the girls agree that they have experienced their share of heartache and disappointment but have learned valuable, lifelong lessons in the process. That is why they deliver their songs with such heartfelt emotion and intensity. Watch their star rise! Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL)…you won’t be the only celebrities from Jacksonville for long because this is the year of the JAG. For info and booking information contact 1107 Management at (404)379-8673.
