Jan Smith is:
Vocal coach to Usher, Rob Thomas and matchbox 20, India.Arie, American Idol finalist Diana DeGarmo, Collective Soul, rapper Young Jeezy, R&B phenom Ciara, and country music's Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland – more than 50 signed recording artists and hundreds of other developing artists. She has coached over 5,000 vocal students and owns a full-on production studio and artist development facility in Atlanta; she and her staff instruct more than 250 students a week.
Jan coaches more current charting artists than any other vocal instructor in the United States.
Jan is a certified multi-platinum vocal coach and vocal producer.
She is a national trustee for the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS), and attends the Grammy’s each year as a voting member of the Academy and as a backstage vocal coach for her clients who are nominees. (Past nominees include: Usher, Rob Thomas, Ciara and Sugarland.
She is a sought-after session vocalist/vocal arranger, as well as recording artist with six independently released CDs, and continues to perform as an artist in the Southeast.
Jan was featured on MTV’s “Duets” – a reality show in which contestants competed to sing with their favorite artists. When Usher was the “prize,” he selected a winner and brought the contestant to Atlanta to have ”his vocal coach” (Jan) work with the girl prior to recording in the studio, all of which was taped and aired on the show. Jan has also been featured on programs for VH-1 (with Chilli and T-Boz of TLC) and BET (with Ciara).
Jan owns a state-of-the-art digital recording studio where she currently produces and records independent album projects with her production partner, Huston Singletary.

Jan holds seminars all over the country and was invited to China to conduct the first interactive music and vocal workshop for the Chinese Audio Visual Association (CAVA). She was the only woman to be invited to participate in the prestigious judging process for the Golden Disc Awards (China’s version of the Grammy’s) and was the only American invited back to China to present for the awards ceremony.
Jan has an informational video on the market that focuses on life in the music industry and on the road. It includes an introduction by Rob Thomas.
Jan is a favorite on local radio stations and talk shows for both her “on the fly” critiquing abilities and her live vocal skills.
