Sinden review, FACT Magazine – July '07 I get sent so many Baltimore versions of hip hop tracks (and, more recently, ironic 80s ones by any kid with a copy of Ableton) that I can get a bit "whatever" about it. I was surprised then when I got an email with a promo of a new release from a Scottish label called Dress 2 Sweat, a split EP between Rustie, Pistol Pete, and Dikulous, and found it to be more than decent. Half Baltimore Club and half ghetto house, this release opts for the hip hop route rather than an ironic spin. Pistol Pete grapples with ATL's Crime Mob for a bouncy version of 'Knuck If You Buck', and Rustie also goes down the booty path with his version of Dem Franchise Boys' 'Lean With It'. What sets this release apart from the average and sloppy stuff out there is the extra production in the mix. This doesn't just get lazy with Sing Sing breaks and formula vocal chops.
“One Track†– One Week To Live, August ‘07 Wanna have the club poppin’ like Rod Kelly just turned up for an impromptu live PA? Then pick this up. For those of you not familiar with the whole blog-maintained Baltimore Club movement, let us break it down for you real quick... It’s strictly low down, get bucked, go dumb club music. The thing about B-more is… you can’t actually buy any of the records outside of the US. Okay, so you can pick up the odd Tittsworth EP and, of course, the Uppercuts 12â€s, but all the Unruly Records output? Not on your nelly. Hence the glut of homemade B-more edits (of a lamentable quality) that have fl ooded the internet and indeed the sets of click-happy blog-addicted DJs the world over. Praise the Lord then for the Glasgowbased Dress 2 Sweat fam, who have made a record that you can actually go and buy! Rustie re-rubs Rich Boy’s ‘Throw Some Ds’ in fi ne style, complete with authentic horn licks and extra bass whilst Dikulous builds gets percussive on ‘U Know What To Doo’. Straying into Miami Bass territory, Pistol Pete twists ‘Knuck If You Buck’ into a killer electro joint and Rustie returns with the fi nger-snappin’ Dem Franchize Boyz in tow for a juke-tinged fl ex that would have Jane Fonda pumping the fl oor like Patra. Fully supported by Feadz, DJ Ayres, Orgasmic, Scottie B, XXXchange and Diamond Grills… you know what to do. Words by Alex Stevenson
