BOMFEST URBAN STAGE
The Urban Stage movement started in the first year that BOM held a live summer festival, in 2005. Pete Phillips, a local DeeJay and music producer, was asked by the committee to put together a DeeJay stage. The stage was an adjunct to the main performance area, to host what was considered a fringe interest to people in the local community, that of urban and dance music. These expectations were belied by the excellent reception that the event generated, with a very enthusiastic crowd dancing far in to the night.
Since that auspicious beginning, the Urban Stage Movement has grown exponentially, with an ever-growing membership of artists wanting to lend their time and expertise to the project. The event which started with merely a few DJ’s spinning tunes has now spawned a kind of multi-media crowd experience. DJ’s, MC’s, electronic and ambient synth music, producers and performers of rap and Hip Hop, all combine with graffiti and spray artists and skateboarders to create a truly unique festival experience.
The BOM committee has been hugely supportive throughout the Movement’s growth, helping and encouraging them by providing the platform that they need, and giving them the resources to realise their goal. This has allowed The Movement to book and stage some of the biggest acts in the country. Last year WaxFactor headlined, a down-tempo, self-styled “B-movie” hip hop act with a several albums and a large national following. The year before, Pacifico Ramirez, an exiting live electronic act, took their place on the stage to a rapturous reception. Acts such as DeeJay Time DJ Zolensky and Waxfactor local deejays and producers, have all performed on the Stage and enjoyed it hugely. Now that Locke Park is the new, much larger venue for BOMfest, the Urban Stage Movement can only get better.
The Urban Stage Movement is very much a community based enterprise, with its emphasis and focus directed at local talent, and its goals to promote the urban and electronic scene in Barnsley. Always they are on the lookout for new talent, precocious individuality, and something different; something that can move a crowd. They have only one question.
