We are a small (but growing!) group of friends and neighbors in the Wissahickon section of Philadelphia seriously concerned about the climate crisis we are facing.We need to start small, neighbor to neighbor and friend to friend, to work as a community to find simple ways of cutting down our carbon dioxide emissions (or carbon footprint), and to educate each other and ourselves. We currently meet once a month (every third Friday) to discuss ways we, as a community, can work to reduce our own CO2 emissions and green our community. Some of the ways we want to do this is as follows:Become Tree Tenders (an offshoot of the PA Horticultural Society)-to care for and plant trees throughout the neighborhood.Network with other local community groups to help make our cities and neighborhoods become more sustainable, healthier, and more environmentally friendly.“Adopt†a part of the Wissahickon park and have organized monthly cleanups.Push the city to adopt single stream recycling in all of Philadelphia.Educate one another about the climate crisis-share information and ideas.Purchase and distribute Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFLS) in the neighborhood.Have all households adopt a ‘no throwaway bag’ policy and assist this with purchasing and distributing reusable bags throughout the neighborhood.Work with local schools on developing successful recycling campaigns and educational series for families.Hold a yearly ‘environmental’ flea market in Wissahickon with educational tables and recycled goods.Formulate a Green Certification Program with local businesses.We also want to share the documentary An Inconvenient Truth with as many people as possible, hopefully to mobilize even more people to begin make the changes necessary for sustaining life on this beautiful planet Earth.
