About Me

Passed on through generations of art, music and dance, Leilainia and Adelaide created The Shimmy Sisters, a duet based in San Diego, CA. The sisters dance repertoire encompasses dance in all forms. Being Of Syrian decent the sisters are grounded to traditional Middle-Eastern dance. Influenced by modern, salsa, African, Indian, ballet and hip-hop, the sisters fuse styles and collaborate to bring out essential elements of who they are. Their combined talents and passion elicits a personal response from the audience. They are free spirits full of inspiration. Every piece of a performance is full of emotion. This contagious energy led them into becoming winners of the “Hips of Fury 2006” Ultimate Troupe competition and people's choice winners of Belly Dancer of the Universe 2007. Born into a culture of creativity the sisters were taught technical belly dance moves and Arabic rhythms. More importantly, they learned of dance as an art form generated from the heart and ultimately done for ones self.Dance, is not only what The Shimmy Sisters love and do, it is part of who they are. They teach and perform nationally. www.theshimmysisters.com

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: theshimmysisters.com or danyavaad.com
Band Members: Dancers include Adelaide and Leilainia.Danyavaad Musicians include Greg Vaughan, DJ Sandbag, and Gabriel Penix
Influences: The Shimmy Sisters have been influenced primarily through their upbringing and family. They were taught Belly Dance by their mother Judith Ann and have been dancing to their fathers music from the time they could walk. They also share many influences outside of their Middle Eastern culture. Modern, Indian, and Jazz styles of dance for example, are often included in their constantly evolving performances.
Sounds Like: The Electric Sitar, the main instrument in the band Danyavaad, creates is a mix of sounds between rock and classical Belly Dance rythms. The dumbec ties in the costumary Belly Dance beats, while the Bass creates a strong backbone for the over all sound. Some songs sound similar to those of the Beatles, and other faster ones have a more folky sound. All and all the music is a genre of its own and is completely unique!
