SOBRECARGAThey began as IGOAGRIO Y LAS CRESTAS DEL EXTRANGULANO in the city of Trenque Lauquen (Buenos Aires province), around 1978. They played a sort of experimental prog rock, heavily influenced by Van Der Graaf Generator and Peter Hammill, something that was unusual at that time, when Genesis, ELP or jazz fusion were the common ground for progressive musicians. César Dominici and Sergio Sáez were the guitar players, Guillermo Robles played bass, Gustavo Collado was on drums and Néstor Polenta was the keyboard player. Around 1982, vocalist Sáez and Polenta left, and the three remaining members decided to continue under the name of Sobrecarga, inspired by the Talking Heads's song, "The overload" (Remain in light, 1980). They became friends and played gigs together with the now legendary new wave/post punk band Sumo, when Stephanie Nuttal (ex-Manicured Noise) was still the drummer. The line-up was augmented with Igoagrio's fan Pablo Palezza on percussion. In Buenos Aires they met guitarist Horacio "Gamexane" Villafañe (ex- LAXANTES and CONTROL ) who became a permanent member of the band. In parallel, Gamexane formed the punk/crossover band Todos Tus Muertos. Around 1985 Sobrecarga got a contract with local CBS and in 1986 their first LP was released, "Sentidos congelados" (Frozen senses). In 1987 they played big festivals such as Rock in Bali, Chateau Rock, supported two The Cure's shows (March, Ferrocarril Oeste Stadium) and big venues like Obras Stadium. That same year, a second LP was released, "Mentirse y creerse" (To lie and believe to oneself). By the end of 1988 they split up. In 1989, after the death of Sumo's singer, Luca Prodan (December 1987), Ricardo Mollo (gtr, vox) and Diego Arnedo (bass) went on to form Divididos, recruiting Collado as the drummer, releasing the "40 dibujos ahí en el piso" LP (40 drawings there on the floor). By the second LP, Collado was replaced by Federico Gil-Solá (ex-Wire Train and The Beast). Gamexane went on and off with Todos Tus Muertos, and formed in 1990 LOS 7 DELFINES with ex-Fricción Richard Coleman (now guitarist with Gustavo Cerati's band). Then back again with TTM in mid-nineties to this day. In 1989 César Dominici went solo with the project MATE EN LA CASA . Willy Robles joined Las Pelotas with ex-Sumo members and left just before their first record. In 1995 and 2001, Sobrecarga returned for some shows, but no new material was released. Current project of César Dominici is PHPAMPA . In 2005, Gustavo Collado joined ECCE HOMO , with Juan Cruz Pérez Pardo (gtr, vox) and Hernán Firpo (bass), and are playing now the Buenos Aires circuit. Gamexane is playing with punk outfit RESPONSABLES NO INSCRIPTOS and post punk supergroup LOS SEDANTES (with Rotman & Acevedo, members of Cienfuegos and Mimi Maura). His main project TODOS TUS MUERTOS is now playing all over the world.
