Take one look at Will and you will see a normal guy. Take a listen to his album and you'll hear the rockabilly child of country. The up and coming country music star is no stranger to the stage. He loves nothing better than to get up and tell his story through his music.
Although his passion for country music has been with him since childhood, he dabbled in other styles of music which is evident in his music today.Coming from a rock band called The Shadow Ministry, he has already graced the ARIA and Australian AIR Independant Music Charts. "The rock band just wasn't for me" Will explains. "I'm too laid back and easy going to be jumping round the stage and off speakers so I decided to go back to what I love and that's country".
The self titled album was recorded at Paradise Studios owned by Billy Field (Bad Habits) and produced by the ARIA nominated Bill Chambers (Catherine Britt, Audrey Auld, Becky Willis). Final production was done at Bill Chambers home studio.
"Bill is full of all these brilliant ideas but he never tried to push anything on me" Will laughs. "We played the songs over time and they unfolded the way they were meant to". "Working with a real music legend like Bill has allowed me to push myself into new musical territories and challenge myself to grow as an artist". "We are both a firm believer in risk taking tunes and I think that's why we get along so well, the album is evidence of that". "He is very musical, he knows how to work with a band, knows how to make me feel comfortable and he certainaly knows how to make a great record!". "He's given me a load of advice but the one thing that stuck in my mind while we were making this album was "don't make something that you think people want to hear, make something that you love and that you will enjoy performing every night" and I think we have done that".
On the creative side of things it can seem that Will has wedged himself firmly between Rock and Country, and it's something that he doesn't deny. But his sound, as you'll discover for yourself, is as broad and textured as the outback. It's as if the musicians he has surrounded himself with have combined their talents and invented a new "genre" to country music that appears to physically grow as you listen on. "I think its up to the person listening to put me in the section of their collection that they think I belong" Will states. "I'm only interested in making music, not the politics".
It's never easy to pinpoint exactly where Will is coming from but it's abundantly clear where he's not. There isn't even a hint of the "twang twang" country sound that some people class as the "correct way". Everything is what it seems or how it sounds on this extraordinary record. It's heavy on varied instrumentation without being some kind of overproduced mess. Like a really good piece of pizza, there are a lot of flavours mixing together his personal brand of country.
"The album is a clear snapshot of who I am" Will explains. "I wanted it to be really simple when you first listen to it, but as you play it over and over, the more you discover and the more you take notice". "It's about life, love, dreams, hardship and some really crazy people I know". "I was inspired by everything in my life, friends, family and the stupid things I get up to". "I didn't know I could make music so weird and beautiful".
Will is a singer and wants to establish himself in country. "I'm not particularly flashy behind the mic but I know how to communicate my story". "I don't get caught up in looking at my competition and comparing what I'm doing to them, I'm gonna create my own path and hopefully bring some people along for the ride". "I'm happy with my album and believe it's the best it can possibly be".
"I am really proud of this album, now where's my car? I'm ready to hit the road".
