Pensmoke Music musicMy name is Mike a.k.a. Pensmoke. I am a Christian, a Hip Hop artist, a mixed-blood Tsalagi Indian, a husband and a father. No, Pensmoke is not an 'indian name' it is a name I go by in my music that refers to writing hot flows. I am from Memphis. Grew up in Frayser, what folks are nowadays calling "the bay area". My life has been hard at times. The times it was hard were the times I didn't obey God and follow him like I should have. I got saved years ago thanks to a wonderful woman who lived around the corner from me and witnessed to me about Christ. She ended up being someone who was always there for me and my wife and all of us. Thanks to Mrs. Gerri I was told the news that Jesus Christ came to this Earth and died for my sins and the sins of everyone. I was saved. I tried to do what I thought was the right thing for a while, but fell right back into the High School and neighborhood drama. For years and years I ran with a crew that was not a gang but wasn't too much better. I was pretty much one of the founders of the crew. People stayed out of our way and thought we were nuts and we were often misunderstood. I was doing all that nonsense and not what I was supposed to be doing, following God and doing what He wanted me to do. My wife stuck by me the whole time.We were dating back then. I know it was hard for her because I have behaved like one of the vilest, most horrible people a girl could ever be in a relationship with. Thank God she is still with me today. She has been with me through all of the drama and the running from what I was supposed to be doing. I was running away from doing what was right and wallowing in sins. I got back into Church for a while after moving to Millington and things were slightly better for a while. I had more peace and after my wife and I were married a few months after, we had a baby on the way. What a blessing. We moved to VA and I slid back into my old habits. Pornography, going places I had no business going to, and running once again. After moving several more times we moved to NC. That's where things hit their lowest point in some instances. I was lustful, behaving like a fool, full of anger and unjustly judging and hating on people, and blaming almost everything on my wife's behavior towards me. She was tired of my hateful ways I guess, and on her last nerve, so she was being frigid towards me. I was to blame. After getting into various family drama and having heavy and constant anxiety and panic attacks we were finally able to move from that place to where we are now. I have repented and asked for forgiveness for my hateful judgemental ways and rededicated my life once again to the Lord. He is so merciful and good and forgiving. I have been trying to forgive the family members who gave us a hard time in NC and I am getting closer to forgiving them. I guess healing takes time. I have been able to get back into doing my music like I was doing before, thank the Lord. I really love to do it, and have for years.
I have backslidden in the past many times and fell back in to my old habits but now I am back with force and want to make good music. IF YOU SEE SOME PEOPLE ON MY FRIENDS LIST THAT YOU WOULDN'T THINK I WOULD NORMALLY CHILL WITH OR ASSOCIATE WITH DON'T BE SURPRISED. I DON'T JUDGE PEOPLE, IT'S NOT MY PLACE TO. AND I HOPE THAT BY ADDING ME AS A FRIEND THEY MAY LEARN ABOUT AND BE LEAD TO CHRIST.
I am what some people call a hip hop "purist". The reason for this is I guess because there is very little artists out there that I consider to really be truly "hip-hop" in the true sense. Most people disagree and I have been called a "backpacker" and many other things. Even some cats out there who I consider to be REAL hip hop artists disagree with me about other rappers and whether or not they think they are hip hop. I don't consider Jay-Z to be hip hop. I don't consider most of what they tell you is hip hop on the radio to be hip hop. Rap and hip hop have unique differences that can sometimes be easily distiguished and sometimes can't and are blurry. I don't consider most of what's coming out of the south (mainstream, played on the radio I mean) to be hip hop. "Soulja Boy" is not hip hop. "P. Diddy" is most assuredly NOT hip hop. Outkast kind of walks the line with some of their songs but most of their songs are rap and not hip hop. The same with Eminem. Get ready to hate me..............B.I.G. and 2Pac were not hip hop to me. Why? 2 words.......subject matter. Did they speak on anything dealing with lyrical skills or hip hop in general? Hip hop was first about partying and battling. Then it matured into a tool for unity and educating. Now it has been perverted into something that is not hip hop at all as far as the radio is concerned. Look, I am more of a hip hop traditionalist. If it don't rep what hip hop was about from the early days then it aint hip hop to me. Now I don't mean it has to sound like it did in the 70's/80's to be authentic. Hip hop has a unique sound and feel to it when it is pure. It has been watered down by those who don't have any respect for the art. What happened to the D.J. in the music that they tell you is "hip hop" on the radio? Where is the cutting and scratching? Where are the real hard beats? You wont hear any of that on the radio, but it's still around. Don't believe the radio when they tell you what they are playing is hip hop.
