About Me

BACK COVER
Annette Fix always believed in happily-ever-after and was busy working her Five-Year Plan: marry her golf-pro boyfriend, homeschool her preteen son, become a famous writer, and retire to Fiji. When her live-in boyfriend calls it quits, Annette finds herself on The Break-Up Diet, consuming vast amounts of chocolate and exercising by diving blindly into the shallow end of the dating pool.
Working as an exotic dancer to bankroll her aspiring writing career and support her son alone, Annette uses her blue-collar instinct to survive in the plastic jungle of The OC.
Annette’s adventures take her on a wild ride as she attempts find the perfect balance between her dreams and her day-to-day life as Supermom.

My Interests

People watching. Tide pool gazing and shell collecting. Dancing in the rain. Puppy hugging. Baby tickling. Good books and great conversation. I'm a certified education junkie and love taking classes to learn all kinds of random stuff: bellydancing, digital imaging, sign language. My last class was picture framing; my next class is teaching one of my dogs to run through an obstacle course. No one is safe around me, I'll drag them to a class too.

I'd like to meet:

My broken-hearted sisters, hopeless romantics, seekers of princes, believers in happily-ever-after, queens of their own castle, and readers who love books that make them laugh and cry and nod their heads, saying--"I've been there."

For an inside peek at what I'm doing when I'm not being a writer, you can check my personal page at www.myspace.com/southocnettie. =)

Music:

Depends on my mood. Doesn't everything? Mostly any music that makes me want to get up and shake it--Em, Akon, Kevin Lyttle, Rihanna. And the old stuff like Connie and Trinere. I could listen to Savin' Me by Nickelback until the file on my iPod wears out. I love Depeche Mode and Tears for Fears imports like The Hurting album, Pet Shop Boys, and Bronski Beat. And in my more contemplative moments, I like singing along to Everything But the Girl, Dido, and Natalie Merchant. When I'm in a happy-go-lucky mood: Bob Marley's Legends album. But I have a wide variety of music on my iPod, obviously. Everything 80's except hair and metal bands (if I ever "bang my head" it'll be because I ran into a door); alternative like Cold Play, Train, and Three Doors Down; a little classic rock like Journey and Cheap Trick; folk like Jann Arden; electronica like Dirty Vegas, iiO, and Moodblast; some R&B, rap, and reggae, a ton of hip hop and mainstream radio pop.

Movies:

Romantic comedies like The Break-Up and Knocked Up (because they remind me to laugh at my life), a good make-me-cry drama like Big Fish and Fried Green Tomatoes, an edge-of-the-seat thriller like Hard Candy, social documentary like Sicko and Supersize Me, an occasional action movie like the Terminator and Borne series', or horror movies like the Saw series (I prefer psychological scary rather than slasher flicks). And I love independent films like The Science of Sleep. All-time favorite movie I can quote from beginning to end: The Princess Bride.

Television:

Prison Break (#1 fan), Lost, Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, CSI Las Vegas, Weeds, Californication, and HGTV's Decorating Cents and Mission Organization--it's like an OCD crackpipe. If I weren't writing books, I'd be sneaking into people's homes and organizing all their stuff while they sleep! Kinda like a FlyLady Fairy. LOL

Did I mention how much I reeeeally love the show Prison Break?

Books:

Like my music, my reading material depends on my mood. I enjoy curling up with a book like The Time Traveler's Wife or The Notebook (two of my favs). Chuck Palahniuk's twisted brilliance. Alice Munro's quiet genius. Janet Fitch's dark melancholy. I even went through a period when I was addicted to Jackie Collins novels, then Joseph Wambaugh, John Saul, and Stephen King. Currently on my nightstand: Tiny Ladies in Shiny Pants by Jill Soloway, The Life of Pi by Yann Martel, The Tender Bar by J.R. Moehringer, The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd, and The Other Mother by Gwendolyn Gross. I often have more than one book going at a time.

Heroes:

Definitely my Dad. (1941-1989) I was and always will be Daddy's Girl.

Single moms--because I know how challenging it is; I was a single mom/sole support and care of my son for 15 years before I met my husband. That's a lot of what my book is about, finding a balance between being the best mom possible, but also nurturing the desires and dreams of the woman on the inside.
