Theda Bara
Currently I am researching and writing a book that explores a series of bizarre killings that took place between 1931 and 1970.
As a result I have a resurrected interest in American History...especially the Great Depression, early 1900's, German settlement in the mid-west, German culture and childrearing in the late 1800's and other surprising topics.
People think that serial killers and violent crimes are something new...
They are not.
People simply GOT AWAY with it back then...
Who killed the Black Dahlia?
I remember the first time I read about the Black Dahlia. I was very young and it scared me to death.
For those of you that don't already know, Beth Short was taken somewhere on the night of January 14th 1947 and tortured while still alive. She was eventually severed at the waist, scrubbed clean and taken to a vacant lot where she was dumped.
Her body was posed at great risk to the killer, before he jump into his car and screeched off into the California night.
..
As time has passed, you would think that it would have become less interesting to me, especially in light of all of the other horrible murders that have been committed over all the years since.
But it hasn't.
Who WOULD do this?
Who physically even COULD do this?
and WHY?
I'll never rest until I know.

"The Black Dahlia"...in life.
..
The Black Dahlia's real name was Elizabeth Short. By all accounts she was a sweet and innocent girl who was unfortunately the product of a disturbing, hurtful childhood. I believe it was the ultimate rejection of her father...that eventually helped to caused her demise.
Below is a mugshot that was taken when Elizabeth was 19 years old.
She had been picked picked up for under age drinking in a restaurant after her father threw her out of the house.

"It has, moreover, been proven that horror, nastiness, and the frightful are what give pleasure when one fornicates. Beauty is a simple thing; ugliness is the exceptional thing. And firey imaginations, no doubt, always prefer the extraordinary thing to the simple thing."
de Sade, from
The 120 Days of Sodom

Below is a headline from a July 1937 newspaper about the "Cleveland Torso Killer." For 4 years the Torso killer dismembered and decapitated over 12 victims in the Cleveland area known as "Kingsbury Run", posing their bodies and creating bizarre crime scenes meant to mock the police and frighten the public. In 1938 a note was sent to the Cleveland Police Department claiming to be the killer and announcing that the killings would end. Subsequently the killings stopped and are unsolved to this day.

Right now my heroes are people who work at McDonalds and still have a smile on their face. Hospital workers that are kind to their patients...even when they don't deserve it. People who allow other people to be rude and pass no judgment. Right now my heroes are the people that make me smile everyday.
