You see in the summer months when classes were not in session Stillwater Oklahoma became just another dusty little Oklahoma town...... not much to do but drink beer and make music. The problem was there was plenty of beer but not very many people to play music for, they all had gone home for the summer. To make a long story short the concept of making our own crazy fun has carried over even to today and "IN PROTEST OF BOREDOM" had it's hey day as well. In the late 70s IN PROTEST OF BOREDOM found it's way onto KAZU radio in Pacific Grove, California. KAZU at that time was a community radio station that permitted each of it's "volunteering" D.J.s to program their own shows. It was wonderful, there was 50s Rock & Roll, Bluegrass, Jazz, Classical, Country, Heavy Metal, Classic Rock, etc. etc. etc. and then late on Saturday nights for eight years there was "IN PROTEST OF BOREDOM" with Jerry Ford."IN PROTEST OF BOREDOM" had to be different than everything else and in every way. The strangest, weirdest music that could be found was played, music even Dr. Demento had rejected! "Kill Ugly Radio", a quote from Frank Zappa became the show's slogan, all stops were pulled and anything was possible.Besides the crazy and sometimes actually quite sophisticated music not even Jerry Ford knew what was going to happen, once he lowered the microphone out the window of the second floor and had cars driving by honking and yelling, when people would call in and request a song he didn't have Jerry would have them play it over the phone for the listeners at home. Jerry would play local groups tapes that most stations wouldn't touch and even invited many local musicians into the studio to play live.In the eight years "IN PROTEST OF BOREDOM" was on the air many unexpected things happened, like the night that a couple of Jimi Hendrix fans brought down a bunch of super rare Jimi interviews and recordings and while the show was going on Buddy Miles just happened to walk in the door! He had been driving down Highway 1 and heard the show and tracked us down cause it was so cool. He stayed and talked about Jimi as a friend and a musician. Another time the founding members of the MOTHERS OF INVENTION, Jimmy Carl Black, Don Preston and Bunk Gardner stopped by and demonstrated Don's new "Organic Sythesizer" which was all of us making rude noises into the mics for about twenty minutes.

Jerry Ford
