Sound Advice Artist Management

A lot of ins and outs, a lot of what-have-yous

About Me

I've been in the music biz as an artist manager for 14 years now, started with the UK's enigmatic genius John Martyn, now managing two bands from Boston MA, Ernie and the Automatics, featuring Ernie Boch Jr with 2 former members of the multi-platinum selling band Boston, guitarist Barry Goudreau and drummer Sib Hashian, Tim Archibald and Brian Maes, from Peter Wolf's House Party Five, and from John Cafferty's Beaver Brown band, saxophonist Michael "Tunes" Antunes. The other Boston artist is blues legend James Montgomery and his band, who also has a new side project, the Kramer Montgomery Band, with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, Aerosmith's drummer, Joey Kramer. We also work with four acts from New Orleans, an all-star collection of Crescent City musicians, The New Orleans Social Club , The New Orleans Jazz Vipers , songwriter/pianist/rocker Davis Rogan . We recently added an extraordinary young trombone player/vocalist, Glen David Andrews . In the New Orleans OffBeat Music Awards, the Jazz Vipers won the 2006 "Best Traditional Jazz Album" for their latest release "Hope You're Comin' Back, and I was named Manager of the Year in both 2006 and 2007.
Ashley Dorr joined as a full time associate at Sound Advice in June 2007, and became a partner in June 2008. Ashley graduated from Regis College in 2007, majoring in Communication with a Minor in Management. She first contacted Sound Advice in 2003 after reading an article in the Boston Globe about me, saying, "that's what I want to do"! She interned for a summer, worked part time during her college years, and became a full time member of the staff in June 2007. She is responsible for all aspects of our artists careers, advancing dates, contacting press and radio, and occasionally even acting as tour manager. Ashley comes from a a very musical family, her father is a bass player, and her brother leads the popular boston-based rock band, Endway.
We do independent projects for hire as well, cd releases, press kit development, tour pr, website maintenance and development, etc. For more info, check out my website, and if you are a band or singer/songwriter who want to add us as a friend, send me an email and tell me something about yourself first. Sorry, tired of all the friend-bot requests. www.soundadvicemanagement.com,
I was Production Coordinator for a benefit CD that The New Orleans Social Club did entitled "Sing Me Back Home". The most rewarding experience of my music career, it was done in Austin TX 6 weeks after Katrina with an all-star lineup of New Orleans musicians. The "Social Club" is Henry Butler, Ivan Neville, Raymond Weber, and from The Meters, George Porter Jr and Leo Nocentelli. Guests on the Cd included Irma Thomas, John Boutte, Cyril Neville, Troy Andrews, Willie Tee and many others. The Cd was released on Sony Burgundy on April 2006. My position evolved into the band's manager, and the band has been doing selected dates since. In 2006, we played a pre-grammy party for Heineken, taped Austin City Limits the same weekend we performed at SxSW, headlined at the Austin City Limits Festival, and played the Warren Haynes Xmas Jam. 2007 saw the band performing at many festivals and as time allows with all of the band members busy schedules, you will hopefully see them again on the circuit in 2008.
In the late 80's, I was the General Manager of Nightstage, a great music venue in Cambridge MA (now closed. In the early 90's I promoted concerts at the Charles Playhouse in Boston, and towards the end of that decade ran indie record labels for Jonathan Edwards and T Bone Wolk. More recently I managed Boston's Amy Fairchild and Katie Terrio, NYC's Jenny Bruce and Karen Jacobsen, and from New Orleans, the New Birth Brass Band. I live just outside Boston, spend lots of time in New Orleans, where we hope to open an office in 2008. I listen to all kinds of music, well, except that "new country" drivel and gangsta rap. Will always give a listen to original music, have a lot of respect for songwriters who expose their souls for the rest of us to see.
I love to cook... Italian, Thai, Chinese, Brazilian, pretty much any style of cuisine... especially love bbq, grilling and smoking. (Yes, I'm an unabashed carnivore, though awhile back, I did prepare a week of veggie cuisine for a band at a recording studio, and they made a great record) I make the best gumbo you will EVER have. I love to travel, one of my favorite percs of this job, besides New Orleans, it has brought me to the UK, Ireland, Italy, Brazil and all over the US.
I'm one of the least judgemental people you will meet, whatever floats your boat, as they say.... everyone needs to find their own way in life, I hope you are enjoying the journey, I know I am.
