About Me

Playing guitar since I was 4 or so, around 1965. Played professionally since 1977. Numerous country rock bands, and now open to any ideas. I have been writing songs all my life, and I love both acoustic and electric guitar and all kinds of music.I like Stratocasters and Gibson 335s, but right now I am totally in love with my Hamer Echotone, a surprise of a lifetime. My favorite amplifier right now is a custom made Matchless Spitfire clone made by Mike Yankee of Texas Tube Amplifiers of Waco, Texas.

Influences: No way to catalog all of my influences. My Grandpa (next door) loved country music and we shared that; Mom loved and listened to everyone from Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald to Nat King Cole to Marty Robbins. My father has very eclectic tastes and I get that important quality from him. My main Country music influences were Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Glenn Cambell, Roy Nichols, Grady Martin, Eldon Shamblin, Johnny Cash, and many more, but foremost Merle Haggard, the man I believe is the greatest songwriter/singer this country has ever produced. Sometimes he's considered just a great country singer...he is so much more. My first major rock influence that turned my head around was the band Trapeze, and I still think they were the best rock and roll band I have ever seen. I owe those guys. I believe Glenn Hughes is the greatest rock/funk rock singer of our time, and a great songwriter, also. Mel Galley is the epitome of taste for funk rock guitar. Non-country guitarists that influenced me greatly were Mel Galley, Terry Kath, Robin Trower, Toy Caldwell, and the extraordinary Eric Johnson. To a slightly lesser degree, my playing was also influenced by Jimi Hendrix, John McLaughlin, Jeff Beck, Santana, George Benson, BB King, Larry Carlton, Robben Ford, Allan Holdsworth, Albert Lee, Huey Thomasson of The Outlaws, and Steve Morse.....many more. My non-country acoustic influences were mainly James Taylor and Dan Fogelberg. I love bluegrass....Tony Rice, Ricky Skaggs...did I mention Ray Flacke? LOL......too many influences to list.I put that my genre was country, rock and folk. I don't consider myself to be any of them, really, and I hate categories. I probably should have just said Americana or folk. It's all folk music anyway no matter what you play, if you play it from the heart.
