Joshua Geisler is a multi-instrumentalist performer (guitar and bansuri), composer, producer, instrument maker, and author. He is an innovative musician whose style transcends cultural boundaries by embracing both the familiar and the exotic.His electric guitar playing is marked by a mastery of the traditional American guitar styles combined with Indian Classical music techniques borrowed from sitar and sarod players. He has innovated the construction of the bansuri by modifying the embouchure of the traditional instrument to take advantage of modern improvements in flute acoustics which has resulted in improved sound and response. He recently returned from 6 months in India on a fellowship from the American Institute for Indian Studies, where he wrote his first book, "The Chromatic Bansuri", which is a practice method that combines Indian Classical Music and Western harmony. "The Chromatic Bansuri" details a comprehensive fingering system of his own creation that enables bansuri players to expand their harmonic vocabulary by playing in all 12 keys as well as traditional Indian techniques such as Gamak, Meend, and Murki as taught by the great Pandit Raghunath Seth. It will be available in spring 2008.
