About Me

Why Animals Matter: The Case for Animal Protection offers a concise yet complete overview of the problems of animal suffering. Authors Erin E. Williams and Margo DeMello examine industries that exploit animals--factory farms, experimentation, entertainment, the pet industry, fur, and sport hunting and look at the connections between mistreatment of animals and humans.
Highly informative yet reader-friendly, this book also includes positive case studies of rescued animals and inspiring stories of individual successes.
Now available via Barnes and Noble and Amazon or your local bookstore!
“Animal experts Williams and DeMello deliver an excellent look at cruelty to animals on an institutional level in various industries, taking a ‘common sense perspective’ and revealing many disturbing facts that could turn the most ardent meat eater into a hard-core vegetarian.
—Publishers Weekly
"In prose that deliberately avoids complicated ethical and philosophical reasoning but instead states the case for humane treatment of animals in basic language, the authors examine the meat industry, hunting, the textile industry, animal experimentation, the pet industry, and animals in entertainment...A well-organized presentation of the animal-welfare argument."
-Nancy Bent, Booklist
"...Authors Erin E. Williams of the Humane Society of the United States and Margo DeMello of the House Rabbit Society coolly present sordid details of the human-animal 'relationship' in America...Rationalizations and arguments about history, necessity and overpopulation don't stand up to the heavily footnoted studies and points made here."
-Bookpage
“Why Animals Matter: The Case for Animal Protection provides a readable, concise, and informed survey of the issues...they also enliven and individualize the reader’s understanding by presenting case studies of individual animals rescued from these enterprises. This approach effectively touches the readers’ hearts while educating their minds as to the need for reform in animal use.”
—Bernard E. Rollin, author
“Why Animals Matter: The Case for Animal Protection isn’t a good book, it's a great book! It’s not only easy to read but also packed with useful and up-to-date information concerning the innumerable ways in which humans selfishly use animals, why animals need to be protected now more than ever, and how we all can play a role in this social movement by making humane choices that are good for animals and our one and only planet.
—Marc Bekoff, University of Colorado, Boulder; author
“Erin Williams and Margo DeMello have written a compact and compelling treatise on how animals suffer in institutional settings and why people of conscience should take note and take action. They have put together an overwhelming case for a new ethic in dealing with animals, and my greatest hope is that it will have a vast readership.”
—Wayne Pacelle, President & CEO
The Humane Society of the United States
“A comprehensive, up-to-date, passionate and above all, compassionate account by two people who are knowledgeable about animals, and even more important, love them. I am happy to recommend this book to the growing number of people who care deeply about animals.”
—Jeffrey Masson, author
"With this comprehensive survey of animal exploitation, Williams and DeMello seek to lift the veil of ignorance that sustains a cruel status quo...Buoyed with stories of animal survivors and their rescuers, Why Animals Matter offers some hope in a world of despair...."

California Egg Farm Investigation

..

Hidden camera footage recorded by an undercover investigator with the animal protection organization Mercy For Animals reveals shocking animal abuse at one of California's largest egg factory.

The footage exposes birds confined in cages so small they can't spread their wings, birds living amongst rotting corpses, and workers kicking, stomping on, throwing, and breaking the necks of live animals. Sadly, the conditions documented mirror those found at egg farms across the country, showing that cruelty to animals is the egg industry norm.
