Conflict of interest? Animal Services Union Represenative.Christopher Ward, naturalist for the city’s El Dorado Nature Center Park, who also runs Long Beach’s Adopt-a-Beach program.News Details CALIFORNIA COASTAL CLEANUP DAY The City of Long Beach is seeking volunteers to help clean up several sites in Long Beach by participating in the 22nd Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, September 16, from 9 a.m. to noon. The 2006 Cleanup will look to build on the success of last year’s event, when an estimated 52,000 volunteers turned out to remove just under 1 million pounds of debris from California’s shorelines – the largest single event in terms of volunteers and pounds of debris in the Cleanup’s history. Here in California’s fifth largest city, the trash problem is exacerbated by geography. With more than twenty-eight communities upriver from Long Beach, there is cause for concern among local residents. The City of Long Beach lies between the mouths of two large river systems, the Los Angeles River on the west and the San Gabriel River on the east. Eighty per cent of the debris found here is from other jurisdictions, carried here by the storm drain system and these rivers. “It is crucial that we enlist as many volunteers as possible to work at the City’s twelve cleanup sites”, said Christopher Ward, Long Beach Coordinator. “The numbers of local people willing to help out has increased each year since I began in 2001," ard said, “and this figures to be the largest cleanup in our City’s history.”Volunteers are encouraged to register online at www.coast4u.org. Call the City of Long Beach Coordinator, Christopher Ward of El Dorado Nature Center, at (562) 570-4885 for more information.Participants should bring hats, sunscreen and water. Bags and gloves will be supplied. Parking will be free at all locations. Certificates of Participation will be available upon request. For more information on the California Coastal Cleanup Day visit www.LBParks.org.Sponsored by the California Coastal Commission with support from the Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine and the El Dorado Nature Center, this event supports California’s contribution to the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC).For information about programs at El Dorado Nature Center, call (562) 570-1745. For information on other Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine programs, call (562) 570-3100 or visit www.LBParks.org.
