Barbados' Pop-Rock Anthem/Elemental Reggae Lovechild Crashes Rock/Reggae Cliché Party. Again.
The Rock/Pop/Ska/Reggae tunesmiths ride again with their second album, titled after their island's latitude. The songs on 'Thirteen Degrees North' seem like they were written either permanently staring out to sea or straight up at the sun. The sounds of The Police, UB40 and Crowded House are all rolled into one here, with the band seamlessly weaving through anthemic pop/rock and spartan, angular, energetic ska/reggae.
The band caught the attention of The Billboard World Songwriting Contest in 2003 and debut album 'Up In The Air' saw Kite working with the likes of Jeremy Harding (Sean Paul producer/manager). Recent events include Kite song 'Firefly' featuring on US TV series Ghost Whisperer (with the 'fwaaaarrrr' Jennifer Love-Hewitt) and Canadian TV series 'Degrassi'.
Chosen as the only international act to perform at the Florida Music Festival 2005, Kite secured a subsequent publishing deal with LA-based RipTide Music and has gone on to headline Culture Shock, the Caribbean's premier rock festival.
Kite has found its sound on this second album, and one feels that they are really on to something here, as they effortlessly combine Rock, Pop, Ska, Indie & Reggae (check Ride On!) with a sound that would work in many a playlist, but never just simply blend in. Definitely that Sesame Street 'One of These Kids Is Doing His Own Thing' here and it could have only popped out of a place like Barbados, where the rules over many things, including music, are less militant and more open than just about everywhere else on the planet. Good thing too.
The new album takes the form of an enhanced CD featuring a full music video to 'Firefly', a photo gallery, and an unlikely behind-the-scenes look at making a rock album in the Caribbean...
