Ian Anthony

Songwriter/Bassist in that order.

About Me

Ian Anthony is a songwriter and self-taught musician. He plays a number of instruments, the chief one being bass guitar. He also plays steel drums (bass), maracas, and irons, a percussive instrument used in steelband orchestras.

He was born in Trinidad, West Indies, and is a naturalized US citizen currently residing in New York. He is the founder of IR Music Publishing and All Inclusive Records.

He plays and/or composes instrumentals, new age and chamber music, blues, bossa nova, calypso, jazz, and pop music of all varieties.

Ian takes pride in stating he has no formal musical training. His attempts to understand theory came, to paraphrase him, at his own leisure and at no formal institution.

He hopes to release his first professional recording entitled “In Memory of Nina Simone,” under his own label, as a dedication to one of his biggest musical influences by Spring 2009.

Influences: What! Influences? My God. How much time do you have? There are so many:

Calypsonians. There are too many to mention, but I must call the late great Lord Kitchener's name above all others. You are my ultimate idol and icon. Lord Maestro, RIP. The Merchant, Lord Shorty, RIP. Newer jacks: Andre Tanker and Onika Bostic, RIP.

Angus Noons. You are one of the greatest bassists to ever play calypso. Period. And definitely my favorite.

All parang bands who stayed true to playing authentic parang music: Daisy Voisin, the queen of parang, I love you with all my heart and soul, RIP. The Lara Brothers, I love you with all of my heart and soul.

All steelband orchestras of Trinidad and Tobago, especially the Merry Tones Steel Orchestra and the Ice Water Pan Ensemble. All of the great steelband arrangers and composers. Clive Bradley, RIP.

Bob Marley, RIP. Boukman Eksperyans. Rock on.

Nina Simone, my ultimate icon number 1B, RIP. Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn and Billie Holiday. Dinah Washington, Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Ida Cox, Mahalia Jackson, plus many other singers.

All of the great classical music composers and jazz musicians. There are too many to mention. I must call though, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley. Really, there are too many to mention and I didn't call many great ones, Thelonius Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, RIP. Paul Desmond, you are not as well known but definitely one of my favorite alto sax players.

Blues: Again, too many to mention. Pinetop Perkins, Jay McShann, my love, RIP. Lightning Hopkins, RIP. Clarence Gatemouth Brown, RIP. Soul man Ray Charles, my love, RIP.

Latin and Latin Caribbean: Ruben Gonzalez, RIP. Ibrahim Ferrer, RIP. The Buena Vista Social Club and all artists affiliated with the Buena Vista Social Club, Celia Cruz, Carmencita Lara, Susana Baca of Peru, Cesaria Evora of the Cape Verde Islands, Hector LaVoe, etc., etc. Latin music the world over: cumbia, merengue, salsa, parang, flamenco, bolero, all of it.

From Brazil: Olodum, Daniela Mercury, Ilye Aye, Timbalada, Joao Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim. . . . All Brazilian roots music: pagode, bossa nova, axé, you name it.

Bob Dylan. Pink Floyd. Geddy Lee of Rush. Mark Knopfler as in the front man for Dire Straits. Motorhead, the greatest heavy sounding band ever. Lemmy, one of the baddest of the bad asses ever. Steve Harris and Iron Maiden.

Orange Sky: Keep rockin'. I am hoping so much for your continued success, plus the million other musicians I cannot all mention here.
Sounds Like: First release? Blues boogie with some jazz and bossa nova infusion here and there to spice things up!
