The National Guild of Hypnotists, Inc. is a not-for-profit, educational corporation in the State of New Hampshire. Founded in Boston, Massachusetts in 1951 the Guild is a professional organization comprised of dedicated individuals committed to advancing the field of hypnotism. We provide an open forum for the free exchange of ideas concerning hypnotism. The Guild is a resource for members and a vehicle for legal and legislative action. We were established in 1951 by an enthusiastic group of hypnotists and Dr. Rexford L. North, Director of the Hypnotism Center of Boston, MA. Within a short time, local chapters were formed and operating in many major cities throughout the US and Canada. Important resources through the years have been The Journal of Hypnotism and The Hypno-Gram, the very first publications devoted exclusively to the field of hypnotism. This unique organization continues to encourage an eclectic exchange of ideas, fellowship, mutual trust and cooperation among members - while promoting and protecting the art, science and philosophy of hypnotism. As President and Executive Director, Dr. Dwight F. Damon has made it his mission to do everything possible to have our field recognized as a separate and distinct profession. The Guild has always assisted wherever needed, helping other groups and individuals in various states regardless of their affiliations. Each year the NGH holds an educational conference which is attended by hypnotists from all over the world. We welcome all to join. We now serve over 10,000 members in 65 countries, Are you one of them ?
There are many very knowledgeable and talented hypnotists moving up through the ranks, and you see their names appearing more and more as they speak, write or receive awards for their contributions to the profession and the Guild. They are not the get-rich-quick, anything for a buck, flash-in-the-pan types - they are dedicated and in it for the long haul, and we appreciate them. World Hypnotism Day on January 4th was once again an outstanding success thanks to Chairperson Tom Nicoli and all our hard-working participants. The event has grown larger each year thanks to the hard work of many of our dedicated practitioners-it is truly a world celebration with all of the participation from other countries other than the U.S. Legislatively our profession held its own across the country thanks to Rev. C. Scot Giles, our Legislative Liaison Officer, NGH hard-working volunteers, assistance from our NFH 104 Union, and truly great backing of OPEIU and AFL/CIO?state federation officials where needed. As usual we worked for the protection of all hypnotists, not just our own members. We invite all hypnotists who are not members of NGH to join us-there is strength in numbers, particularly when we are going up against the establishment to prove our worth. I look forward to 2007 as being another year of growth and accomplishment, not only for the National Guild of Hypnotists, but for our individual members who are the present-day pioneers of our profession. We have been working diligently at our New Hampshire headquarters to increase the efficiency of the entire office. This will make it easier for our dedicated staff to give each individual member the personal attention and quick response they deserve. Only two of our staff are not yet certified consulting hypnotists, and those two are scheduled to take a course this Spring - we feel that this gives them all better insight in answering queries from members. One thing that never ceases to amaze me is when hypnotists talk about "politics" in conjunction with our profession. Now, if they are talking about legislative battles that the NGH and NFH 104 have fought to protect the rights of all hypnotists to practice, they are right on target. In the legislative arena there is certainly a lot of "politics" involved - after all, you are dealing with politicians! However, when they are talking about the relationship of professional hypnotism organizations with each other as "politics," they are way off base. When each organization strives to deliver the very best of everything to its members it is not "politics," and it is not even properly called competition - it is just good business. Yes, somehow the word "politics" has been injected into our profession, even to the degree of being combined as "hypno-politics," among those who have lots of time on their hands and are talkers not doers. You might be surprised at the number of outspoken critics of anything and everything, who don’t actually practice hypnotism, yet they hide behind their smoke and mirrors on the Internet. Practitioners in other health professions don't talk about colleagues as competitors, and their organizations are not involved in "politics" between each other-they look at the big picture - what will benefit their clients, members, and their profession as a whole. Since its inception the National Guild of Hypnotists has always maintained a professional relationship with other membership organizations and their leaders. During the past twenty years, we have persevered in building a profession for all hypnotists. All our legislative efforts have been with the best interests of the entire profession and we have always fought against one-sided, self-serving legislation when we found it. However, the brightest and the best professional hypnotists from around the world seek us out to become NGH members ... our dedicated CIs train hundreds of eager new practitioners annually ... hypnotists who are known throughout the profession share their thoughts and knowledge in the most prestigious publications of the profession ... hundreds of adjunct faculty members and thousands of attendees help us to provide an open forum for a free exchange of ideas concerning hypnotism at the annual conventions and our Solid Gold weekends The fact that many other hypnotism organizations have brought their rich histories and experienced members under our banner during the past twenty years certainly speaks for itself. Why am I telling you all this? Well, as one of the four founding members still active in the Guild I think I can speak for the other three in saying we feel a responsibility to see our dedication and work go on as our profession continues to grow in public and professional acceptance. We want our members to feel proud of the fact that they belong to the National Guild of Hypnotists and proud that they are professional hypnotists helping ordinary, everyday people with ordinary, everyday problems. Even if you are not yet a Guild member you are welcome to attend the Solid Gold Weekend on February 24 - 25 in Las Vegas, and also our annual convention/educational conference August 10 - 12 in Marlborough, Mass.
